In this thesis, we study photon production and photon-hadron correlations at next-to-leading order (NLO) in proton-proton collisions, in both the cases of isolated and non-isolated photons. To begin, fundamentals of perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) are reviewed, with an emphasis on describing how to compute spectra for single particle production and correlated pairs at both leading order (LO) and NLO in hadronic collisions. In particular, a discussion of infrared and collinear singularities at NLO will provide a natural introduction to the concept of factorization. These results are then specifically applied to the case of computing photon and pion single-particle cross-sections in proton-proton collisions at Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and Large Hadron Collider(LHC) energies, and compared to experimental data from the PHENIX and CMS experiments respectively. Included in this will be a short study of the theoretical systematic uncertainty ...

This book contains proceedings of the 7-week INT program dedicated to the physics of the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), the world's first polarized electron-nucleon (ep) and electron-nucleus (eA) collider to be constructed in the United States. The 2015 NSAC Long Range Plan recommended EIC as the 'highest priority for new facility construction following the completion of FRIB'. The primary goal of the EIC is to establish precise multi-dimensional imaging of quarks and gluons inside nucleons and nuclei. This includes (i) understanding the spatial and momentum space structure of the nucleon through the studies of TMDs (transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions), GPD (generalized parton distributions) and the Wigner distribution; (ii) determining the partonic origin of the nucleon spin; (iii) exploring the new quantum chromodynamics (QCD) frontier of ultra-strong gluon fields, with the potential to seal the discovery of a new form of dense gluon matter predicted to exist in all nuclei and nucleons at small Bjorken x — the parton saturation. The program brought together both theorists and experimentalists from Jefferson Lab (JLab), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) along with the national and international nuclear physics communities to assess and advance the EIC physics.

This thesis introduces readers to the Standard Model, the top quark and its properties, before explaining the concept of spin correlation measurement. The first measurement of top quark spin correlations at the LHC in the lepton+jets decay channel is presented. As the heaviest elementary particle, the top quark plays an essential role in the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. In the case of top quarks being produced in pairs at hadron colliders, the Standard Model predicts their spins to be correlated. The degree of correlation depends on both the production mechanism and properties of the top quark. Any deviation from the Standard Model prediction can be an indicator for new physics phenomena. The thesis employs an advanced top quark reconstruction algorithm including dedicated identification of the up- and down-type quarks from the W boson decay.

As part of a study of large p/sub T/ phenomena in proton-proton collisions at the CERN ISR, a search for direct single photon production has been performed. A statistical division of the data sample into the fraction consistent with single photon production and the fraction due to multiphoton decays of neutral hadrons is accomplished by measuring the average conversion probability for the sample in a one radiation length thick converter. The fraction of the sample attributable to direct single photon production is .gamma./all = 0.074 +- 0.012 for 6 GeV/c = 0.26 +- 0.04 for p/sub T/> 10 GeV/c, with an additional systematic uncertainty of +- 0.05 for both values. It is found that single photons are produced preferentially with no accompanying particles on the same side. The ratio of positive to negative particles on the away side is found to be 3.7 +- 1.2 at high x/sub E/ and p/sub T/ for the single photon events.

Articles focus on the planned European proton-proton collider, and concentrate on physics issues, rather than the more technical concerns addressed in the three previous workshops. The use of energies much higher than those of the American Superconducting Super Collider is featured. Topics include reviews of current projects, hadron collisions, lep
