The report summarizes work in simulating the Digital Radar Landmass Simulator (DRLMS) for evaluation purposes. The software produced under this contract is run on a computing facility to generate simulated radar images on a radar display. The work done consisted of two parts: production of a data base and simulation of the hardware's processing of this data base. In development of the data base, the contractor compressed government-supplied data, in a grid format, to an 'edges' representation. The edges are ridge and valley lines, in the case of terrain data, and reflectance boundaries for culture data. The algorithms used to achieve this representation are not to be construed as 'optimum'. They are, however, vehicles for studying a technique and can be easily modified by the user if desired.

Technical and economic feasibility of digital radar landmass simulator validated through fully-digital simulation, demonstrating conformity of simulated airborne radar scope displays to the terrain, hydrography, and culture of corresponding source maps. Methods of data compression verified, and special radar effects protrayed by all-digital simulation. (Author).

The purpose of the in-house Radar Landmass Simulation (RLMS) project is to develop a research tool for study in the area of digital radar training devices. The tool should help one to determine an optimum specification for procured hardware and to define the training requirements, offer a means of evaluating proposed hardware schemes through simulation of the proposed schemes, and be capable of producing a simulated radar scope display in simulated real-time. Finally, the research tool should be easily changeable to facilitate experimentation. The report contains a general description of the hardware and software which has been developed, with emphasis on the results obtained. The appendices contain detailed schematics for the hardware, flowcharts and listings for the software.

The report presents a logical design of a natural terrain radar land mass simulator, techniques for incorporating radar effects, and cultural terrain into the simulator, and relationship between simulator design and specific operational requirements. The results of this work indicate that the techniques developed are feasible from an engineering standpoint but are impractical due to cost considerations. A firmer understanding of the information content of maps and digital representation techniques must be established to compress the data to a degree whereby an economically feasible device can be developed. Project 1183 was designed as an engineering development model to demonstrate the effectiveness of digital radar landmass simulation and to establish a technological baseline from which future high resolution Digital Radar Landmass Simulators (DRLMS) can be developed. Among the goals of this project were: to demonstrate the feasibility of high resolution radar landmass simulation; to develop, concurrently, a digital data base; to be an engineering test bed for the development of specifications for future Air Force radar simulators; and to gather data about interfacing a DRLMS to an existing mission simulator.
