Results of this study illustrate the utility of a numerical-modeling approach to evaluate ground water-surface water interactions. The results also suggest several implications for watershed management in Coastal Plain settings where stream discharge is dominated by baseflow. The significant "lag" time required for recharged ground water (and associated contaminants) to flush out of the system is an important consideration for the protection of surface-water quality. As previously noted by others, the temporal and spatial aspects of ground-water flow within the source area must be taken into account when evaluating baseflow and ground-water chemistry. Finally, source areas in Coastal Plain settings are dynamic in size and shape and can be significantly influenced by stresses imposed on the ground-water system by artificial recharge.
