Simple Dense Fluids is a nine-chapter text that explores the chemistry and physics of simple fluid systems. Simple systems primarily include the noble gases, the homonuclear diatomic molecules, and a select group of some polyatomic but spherically symmetrical molecules. The opening chapter describes the change of thermodynamic functions along the saturation line and how these functions can best be obtained from sets of measurements that are often in conflict, with an emphasis on the functions of three simple liquids: argon, nitrogen, and oxygen. The following chapter outlines the basic thermodynamic and statistical mechanical ideas that have been applied to the liquid-vapor interface, followed by a summary of surface tension data of simple fluids. Considerable chapters are devoted to X-ray, light, and neutron scattering measurements on simple dense fluids. This book further discusses the use of electromagnetic data, especially the dielectric constant and refractive index, in the interpretation of molecular interactions and molecular structure. The available experimental data on several nonpolar liquids and liquid mixtures are also provided. The final chapters survey the nuclear relaxation and spectroscopic data in simple liquids. These chapters also present experimental data relevant to transport phenomena in simple fluids. Workers and researchers in the field of simple dense fluids will find this book of great value.

An Introduction to the Statistical Theory of Classical Simple Dense Fluids covers certain aspects of the study of dense fluids, based on the analysis of the correlation effects between representative small groupings of molecules. The book starts by discussing empirical considerations including the physical characteristics of fluids; measured molecular spatial distribution; scattering by a continuous medium; the radial distribution function; the mean potential; and the molecular motion in liquids. The text describes the application of the theories to the description of dense fluids (i.e. interp ...

Wetting: Theory and Experiments collates papers published by Professor Eli Ruckenstein and his coworkers on the theoretical and experimental investigation of wetting of solid surfaces. It contains six chapters, each of which is preceded by a short introduction. The papers are selected according to the specific features being considered and they are arranged in logical rather than chronological order. The book focuses on wetting on the nanoscale (nanodrops on solid surfaces, liquid in the nanoslit) considered on the basis of microscopic density functional theory and to dynamics of fluid on the solid surface considered on the basis of hydrodynamic equations. Along with this, experimental studies of wetting related to various applications are presented.

Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage of progress in the major areas of chemical research. Written by experts in their specialist fields the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, supplying regular critical in-depth accounts of progress in particular areas of chemistry. For over 90 years The Royal Society of Chemistry and its predecessor, the Chemical Society, have been publishing reports charting developments in chemistry, which originally took the form of Annual Reports. However, by 1967 the whole spectrum of chemistry could no longer be contained within one volume and the series Specialist Periodical Reports was born. The Annual Reports themselves still existed but were divided into two, and subsequently three, volumes covering Inorganic, Organic and Physical Chemistry. For more general coverage of the highlights in chemistry they remain a 'must'. Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. The current list of Specialist Periodical Reports can be seen on the inside flap of this volume.

Between June 6-10, 1988, the Third Chemical Congress of North America was held at the Toronto Convention Center. At this rare gathering, fifteen thousand scientists attended various symposia. In one of the symposia, Professor Pierre-Gilles de Gennes of College de France was honored as the 1988 recipient of the Amer ican Chemical Society Polymer Chemistry Award, sponsored by Mobil Chemical Corporation. For Professor de Gennes, this international setting could not be more fitting. For years, he has been a friend and a lecturer to the world scientific community. Thus, for this special occasion, his friends came to recount many of his achievements or report new research findings mostly derived from his theories or stimulated by his thoughts. In this volume of Proceedings, titled New Trends in Physics and Physical Chemistry of Polymers, we are glad to present the revised papers for the Symposium and some contributed after the Symposium. In addition, we intend to include most of the lively discussions that took plaGe during the conference. This volume contains a total of thirty-six papers divided into six parts, primarily according to the nature of the subject matter: • Adsorption of Colloids and Polymers. • Adhesion, Fractal and Wetting of Polymers. • Dynamics and Characterization of Polymer Solutions. • Diffusion and Interdiffusion of Polymers. • Entanglement and Reptation of Polymer Melts and Networks. • Phase Transitions and Gel Electrophoresis.
