From Rebecca Rothwell, Author & Illustrator of Simon & Sophie Meet a Bear: I have Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Education degrees and enjoy creating adventurously fun stories. I take pride in my illustrations and typography working together. Grandfather Peters was an editor for Rand McNally. Mother was a Valedictorian who then taught English. Creative Writing came naturally to me. After all, I was named after Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, "Becky" Thatcher, and "Becky" of Vanity Fair. Artwork took discipline. In 1976, Simon & Sophie Meet a Bear was understandably rejected. It was my first draft. The day after getting rejected, Mother listened to a morning talk show where a publisher-spokesperson said that it was an in-sign to get a handwritten letter-of-rejection; that I should keep trying. That was quite a coincidence. I did keep trying. The story with pictures is now ready to share with the world. Many thanks and Happy Birthday to 102-year-old Dorrance Publishing Company. Enjoy! A biography of one of the Middle Ages' most controversial, reckless, and heroic figures Born in France in the early thirteenth century to a crusading father of the same name, Simon de Montfort traveled to England in his adulthood, where he claimed the earldom of Leicester and ingratiated himself into King Henry III's inner circles. Initially a trusted advisor, Simon's good relationship with the king did not last. Frustrated by the increasing injustice meted out to his subjects, Simon would go on to rebel against him, marching on the king's hall at Westminster and leading England's first revolution, and imposing a parliamentary system on Henry's rule. Montfort's life touched on nearly every notable event of the thirteenth century, from the holy wars being fought both abroad and closer to home, to the rebellion against the Plantagenets, to his campaigns against Jews in Leicester. The account of his death in battle-swinging his sword to the last-is one of the most graphic ever written of a medieval battlefield. Ambler provides a living portrait of the Middle Ages, brimming with illuminating insights into religion, society, the nobility, warfare, and daily life. In the words of bestselling historian Dan Jones, Ambler is "a dazzlingly talented historian" and her book on Simon de Montfort "marks the arrival of a formidably gifted historian."

Mikhail Semenovich Vorontsov (1785 1856) is generally acclaimed as one of tsarism's most successful and innovative administrators. After growing up in England, where his father was Russian ambassador, he returned to Russia and became an officer in the army during the Napoleonic wars. In 1823 Alexander I appointed Vorontsov to the post of governor general of New Russia the then "half-wild" southern Ukraine. His task was to encourage development and link the area more effectively with the economy and administration of the empire. Vorontsov was so successful that in 1845 Nicholas I promoted him to viceroy and extended his authority to include Caucasia, which he administered with the extraordinary mandate of "unlimited powers."

Upstate New York, at the confluence of the great Hudson River and its mighty tributary the Mohawk —from this stunning landscape came the creation of a new world of science. In 1887, Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works here and in 1892, it became the headquarters of a major manufacturing company, giving the town its nickname: Electric City. The peak of Autumn, 1919: The pull of scientific discovery brings Charles Proteus Steimetz, a brilliant mathematician and recent arrival from Ellis Island, to town. His ability to capture lightning in a bottle earns him the title "Wizard of Electric City." Barely four feet tall with a deeply curving spine, Steinmetz's physical deformity belies his great intellect. Allied with his Mohawk friend Joseph Longboat and his adopted eleven–year–old granddaughter Midget, the advancements he makes in Electric City will, quite simply, change the world. The peak of Autumn, 1965: Sophie Levine, the daughter of a company man, one of the many scientists working at The Company, whose electric logo can be seen from everywhere in town. Her family escaped Europe just before World War II, leaving behind a wake of annihilation and persecution. Ensconced in Electric City, Sophie is coming of age just as the town is gasping its last breaths. The town, and America as a whole, is on the cusp of great instability: blackouts, social unrest over Vietnam, and soon the advent of the seventies. Into her orbit drifts Henry Van Curler, the favored son of one of Electric City's founding Dutch families, as well as Martin Longboat, grandson of Joseph Longboat. This new generation of Electric City will face both the history of their town and their own uncertain future, struggling to bridge the gap between the old world and the new. Electric City is a vital, pulsing, epic novel of America, of its great scientific ingenuity and its emotional ambition; one that frames the birth and evolution of its towns against the struggles of its indigenous tribes, the immigrant experience, a country divided, and the technological advancements that ushered in the modern world.
