As natural minerals, silica and silicates constitute by far the largest part of the earth's crust and mantle. They are equally important as raw materials and as mass produced items. For this reason they have been the subject of scientific research by geoscientists as well as by applied scientists in cement, ceramic, glass, and other industries. Moreover, intensive fun damental research on silicates has been carried out for many years because silicates are, due to their enormous variability, ideally suited for the study of general chemical and crystallographic principles. Several excellent books on mineralogy and cement, ceramics, glass, etc. give brief, usually descriptive synopses of the structure of silicates, but do not contain detailed discussions of their structural chemistry. A number of monographs on special groups of silicates, such as the micas and clay min erals, amphiboles, feldspars, and zeolites have been published which con tain more crystal chemical information. However, no modern text has been published which is devoted to the structural chemistry of silicates as a whole. Within the last 2 decades experimental and theoretical methods have been so much improved to the extent that not only have a large number of silicate structures been accurately determined, but also a better under standing has been obtained of the correlation between the chemical composition of a silicate and its structure. Therefore, the time has been reached when a modern review of the structural chemistry of silicates has become necessary.

This text focuses on the principles of crystal chemistry and crystal structure as they apply to the major silicate groups. The text fulfills two principal needs by covering the systematics of the mineral groups that are of primary interest to mineralogists and petrologists, as well as the crystal chemical principles that govern the behavior of mineral groups. Students and teachers of graduate-level courses in mineralogy, petrology, and crystallography will find this an essential and useful volume.

Volume 41 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry introduces to the field of high-temperature and high-pressure crystal chemistry, both as a guide to the dramatically improved techniques and as a summary of the voluminous crystal chemical literature on minerals at high temperature and pressure. The three parts of the book introduces crystal chemical considerations of special relevance to non-ambient crystallographic studies, reviews the temperature- and pressure-variation of structures in major mineral groups and presents experimental techniques for high-temperature and high-pressure studies of single crystals and polycrystalline samples as well as special considerations relating to diffractometry on samples at non-ambient conditions.

First published in 1964, as the second edition of a 1939 original, this well-known textbook presents the fundamental principles of crystal chemistry at a level that was suitable for undergraduate students of chemistry, physics, metallurgy, mineralogy and related subjects at the time of its publication. The first part deals with the general principles of crystal architecture in terms of predominant types of binding forces between the atoms themselves. There are chapters on atomic structure, and the ionic, covalent, metallic and van der Waals bonds. The second part contains a discussion of systematic crystal chemistry in which the physical and chemical properties of crystalline substances are related to their structures.
