Theodore Taylor Johnson of New Jersey sailed to California in February 1849 and had returned home by the end of June. Sights in the gold region (1849) is the first published book to relate authentic personal experiences in the California gold fields. Johnson describes his voyage to California and Panama crossing and prospecting in the Culomma Valley. He also writes of his return to San Francisco in the hope of finding work at the end of spring and his discouraged decision to take passage home, again crossing the Isthmus again at Chagres. Personal recollections are fleshed out with second hand discussions of the state's history and culture.

Excerpt from Sights in the Gold Region, and Scenes by the Way Seized with the gold fever and resolved to judge of the wealth of El Dorado by actual observation, I embarked in one of the first steamers which sailed from New York, after the public announcement of the wonderful and extensive gold discoveries. Thus having obtained much information as well as considerable experience, I have written the following narrative during the leisure of a brief sojourn in the country, since my recent return from California. I have not the vanity to suppose that I can encourage or discourage emigration to that region, and much less the wish to do either. ' As I crossed the Isthmus both during the dry and the rainy season, and also visited the gold region, it was my design to furnish at the close of this work a separate chapter of details for the use of the emigrant; but it soon became apparent that in no way could this service be rendered so effectually, as in the regular course of the narrative.
