Excerpt from Sidelights on Negro Soldiers T gives me great pleasure to write a word of intro lduction to this interesting and important book that Mr. Williams has written. The story of the Negro soldier is one of the romances of American history. Even in the days of the Revolution and the War of 1812 he played an honorable part; but it was the Civil War that gave him his first lar'ge opportunity, and at Port Hudson, Fort Wagner, or Fort Pillow he passed through the baptism of fire, striving that the emancipa tion of his people might be guaranteed and the integrity of his country preserved. We also remember another war, and Santiago and San juan Hill, and not only how Negro men went gallantly to the charge but also how the soldiers in a black regiment faced pestilence and fever that their white comrades might be saved. Then came Carrizal, strange prelude of the great con flict to come and once more, at an unexpected moment, the soul of the nation was thrilled by the courage of the Tenth Cavalry. Theirs not to make reply theirs but to do and die. So in the face of odds they obeyed orders and died beneath the Mexican stars. Excerpt from The American Negro Soldier With the Red Hand of France IN the great World War, as in all other wars in which this country has been engaged, the negro has proven himself to be an interesting as well as an important factor. On January lst, 1918, when it was announced that the negro soldiers would be mobilized and sent overseas to take part in the struggle, the eyes of the world were turned on the American negro. The patriotism and fidelity of these people had been rather doubtfully viewed by those who had not been closely related to them. When the call for volunteers came the negro National Guard units rapidly recruit ed to war strength, and when the draft came they responded to their country's call. Excerpt from The Black Troopers: Or the Daring Heroism of the Negro Soldiers in the Spanish-American War History abounds in striking narratives of chivalry and heroism. If profound statesmanship and bitter national struggles; but its most glowing pages are those that record the proud achievements of patriotic soldiers and sailors, in their efforts for the supremacy, Sparta had her Thermopylae;, Haiti her L'Ouverture and Dessalines. Scotland had her Bannockburn, and immortal Bruce. The Afro-Americans have legions, who have forever immortalized themselves by their soldierly conduct in defense of human liberty. It was with the desire to permanently write the names of these illustrious heroes upon the pages of recorded history, and thus insure to generations, yet un-born, a proud heritage, the writing of this volume, as incomplete as it may be, was under taken. Excerpt from The Negro as a Soldier When the war was over the free men returned to meet their same difficulties; the slaves were caught when possible and reenslaved by their former masters. In Boston a few years later we find a party of black patriots of the Revolution mobbed on Boston Common while celebrating the anniversary of the abolition of the slave trade. Excerpt from History of Negro Soldiers in the Spanish-American War, and Other Items of Interest Spain would, no doubt, have received a genuine American thrashing on this occasion had she not been a republic at that time, and President Grant and others thought it unwise to crush out her republican principles, which then seemed just budding into existence.
