Excerpt from Short Studies in the Larger Faith A number of years ago, that venerable Universalist, Dr. G. L. Demarest, prepared a series of questions and answers designed to give to young people and to inquirers a brief outline of the Universalist faith. He called it "A Universalist Catechism," and arranged it to cover a year's time. The catechism was subsequently revised by various hands, and in 1905 the writer was invited to prepare, in connection with it, a series of brief expositions of the several subjects suggested by the questions and answers. Originally appearing in the "Sunday School Helper," they were deemed worthy of a more permanent form, and are now presented as a series of brief studies in the larger faith which, it is hoped, may be serviceable for those who desire a hint of the reasons and the reasoning which form the rational basis of the belief in the final and absolute triumph of good over evil. Excerpt from The Rule of Faith: Being the Baird Lecture for 1905 This book is an enlarged and amended version of six lectures which were delivered in 1905 on the Baird Foundation under the title of 'The Substance and Standard of Christian Doctrine.' I am indebted to the Baird Trustees for the forbearance which they have shown in regard to delay in publication. My main excuse for the procrastination is that I wished to deal more thoroughly with a large subject than was possible in the brief course of lectures originally delivered, and my chief regret is that the improvement has not been commensurate with the delay. The book as it stands has a certain definiteness of scope as a study in the Prolegomena to Dogmatics. The short title which is now adopted is one which was naturalised both in Patristic and Protestant Theology, and the phrase has had a variety of scope which makes it legitimate to use it to cover the discussions alike as to the seat and the substance of doctrine. Excerpt from The Rest of Faith N 0 need then for Christians to become angry at injuries they would be sweetly conscious that their blood is precious in His sight. N 0 need to stand up for their reputation against malicious offenders. N O need then to be putting self forward. Oh! What a. Hidden monster is little self! It is only little indeed, and herein is seen its greatness as an enemy to the soul. It is a little thing to be seeking to advance, a mean thing to set forward, but when set forward a devil to destroy and tear down, and annihilate everything noble, and pure, and holy. N o, in a true and complete consecra tion, self would be given to God and left on His altar to be consumed in His service. May we not safely say that all difficulties arising in churches or in communities come from an undue attention to self. But God sees this, and has distinctly ordered that self shall be laid down at His feet. It is this which marks the new creature. Old things were full of self. The new things, therefore, are rightly supposed to be free from self. Where in reality they are not so, there must either be fearful deception or fearful ignorance. Excerpt from The Doctrines of Our Faith: A Convenient Handbook for Use in Normal Classes, Sacred Literature Courses and Individual Study The other distinction comes inside the circle of those who may be said to have knowledge. For all have not equal knowledge. Not all statesmen are equally learned in state - craft. Not all literary men are equally well versed in lit erature. Not all real and devout Christians are equal ly well informed upon the Christian doctrines. Some know more than others, and this will, no doubt, always be true.
