Excerpt from Shade and Ornamental Trees of California While highways, to be sure, are of extreme importance to motorists, an importance which' can scarcely be overestimated, highways are not merely for motorists. Travelers from the East constantly comment upon a California phenomenon never seen in Eastern cities - the long strings of men and girls pouring out of our cities and towns on holidays, clad in hiking costumes and filing along the roadways - for the roads lead to the trails and the trails to the hills. I The work of our State Department of. Forestry in planting and decorating the highways assumes, therefore, more than a special or group interest. While such improvements increase the pleasure and contentment of the traveler and add large economic values to the regions traversed by the roads, the work serves an additional purpose in giving expression to the spirit of our people, their feeling for the out-of-doors - for the hills, valleys and mountain ranges of this state. For these roads will not merely carry the traffic load of trade, binding city to city, but ably planned and adorned they will be silvan threads worthy to join the wonderlands of California each to each and these in turn with the centers of population. In this manner such work will give a visible sign of the mental attitude and Spirit of the Californians. Willis Linn Jepson. University of California, June 18, 1921. Excerpt from Shade Trees and Other Ornamentals While the planting of a tree is a simple operation and most people have an idea as to how to do it, yet it seems advisable to point out a few of the more important things to keep in mind in the planting and training of the young tree. Soil. Success with shade trees depends in a meas ure on the soil. If the land is too sandy or gravelly, so as to be deficient in plant food or be subjected to droughts, it is important to make a large sized hole and put in a load of good loam. On the other hand, if the soil is too heavy an adobe, it is also advisable to dig a large hole and break through the adobe soil or in some way loosen it, and put in the bottom of the hole good loam and mix with this the adobe soil. In any event have a soft foundation for the roots to penetrate. If the land is not too sandy or too adobe, the hole need not be so large but always make it of sufficient size to take in all the roots of the tree without crowding them. The size of the hole depends on the kind of soil and on the size of the tree. If the soil is in proper condi tion and the tree is four to six feet tall with a normal amount of roots, a hole twenty inches in every direction Should be large enough. Excerpt from Catalogue and Price List of the California Nursery Co: Fruit and Ornamental Trees, Evergreens, Palms, Roses, Etc., 1904-1905 The many excellent treatises on Fruit Culture which hat/e appeared within the past few years - one or more of which should be in the hands of every person intending to plant - render it almost unnecessary to give any directions in that line; yet we are so frequently asked for advice in this way, that we have concluded to offer a few general remarks. The situation of the orchard having been decided on, the ground should be deeply plowed, subsoiled and thoroughly pulverized. The holes should be dug at least a foot larger in every direction than 'actually required by the roots when spread out in their natural position. In planting, the top soil should be broken down into the hole, and worked carefully in between every root and fiber, filling up every' crevice, that every root may be in contact with soil, and the whole made quite firm as the filling up progresses. The tree, when planted, may in light soils stand from two to three inches deeper than it stood in the nursery; but in heavy clay or wet ground it is advisable to have it stand at the same height as it was before transplanting. Excerpt from Complete Descriptive Catalogue of Fruit, Shade and Ornamental Trees: Grapes, Small Fruits, Roses, Shrubs, Climbing Vines, Etc During the winter of 1901 - 2, we bought the Rancho Chico Nurseries, so well and favorably known, which were established in 1851 by the late General John Bidwell. No other nursery stock in the State of California has a reputation equal to the Chico grown trees. Building upon these foundations, the managers of 'the Chico Nursery Company will propagate only strictly first-class, high grade nursery stock true to name, and we ask the great commercial orchard interests of California and adjoining states to give us a fair trial, knowing we can please you and make it to your interests to patronize us, first, because we have the right location second, on account of our fertile soil and suitable climate and third, for the reason that the men who are managing this great Nursery have devoted their entire lives to the work of propagating nursery stock, giving their business the closest attention in every detail. Having no interests except the nursery business, we, therefore, claim to be in better position to serve our customers than the average nurseryman, who is engaged in other enterprises and only works the nursery business as a side issue. Each department of our business is managed by one who has devoted his life to the study of his particular line. Our motto is high-grade nursery stock, true to name.
