During the early years of the institution. The only high schools in the state were located in two or three of the larger cities, and it 'was necessary for the University to offer academic courses in order that students graduating from the schools in smaller towns might continue their work by coming directly to the University. AS the high school system of the state developed, it became pos sible to discontinue the, first year of the academy course; a little later the second year was dropped; and finally in 1904 the academy was entirely abolished.
