Excerpt from Sermons on Christian Doctrine Galatians iii. 26 - 29. For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. Wherever opposite views are held with warmth by religious-minded men, we may take for granted that there is some higher truth which embraces both. All high truth is the union of two contradictories. Thus predestination and freewill are opposites: and the truth does not lie between these two, but in a higher reconciling truth which leaves both true. So with the opposing views of baptism. Men of equal spirituality are ready to sacrifice all to assert, or to deny, the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. And the truth, I believe, will be found, not in some middle, moderate, timid doctrine, which skilfully avoids extremes, but in a truth larger than either of these Opposite views, which is the basis of both, and which really is that for which each party tenaciously clings to its own View, as to a matter of life and death. The present occasion1 only requires us to examine three Views. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Forty Family Sermons These considerations will perhaps lead the reader to account for, if not to justify, the usual plan of the following discourses. That they are brief, and are attempted to be simple, and easily intelligible, and seldom or never controversial, needs no apology. That they should be chiefly elementary, embracing the lead ing points of Christian doctrine and practice, is what the writer wished, at least, to attain. That they are too calm, too little conversant with the striking illustrations and never-forgotten words which are sometimes heard in the pulpit, is partly the writer's defect, but it is also partly incidental; for a sermon written errpressly to be read in families - perhaps often by a son or daughter, the whole audience being only the parents, children, and servants - would be wholly unsuitable if composed in a style very proper for the pulpit. Denunciations must often becorns persuasions; fervent appeals to various classes of character must often become rather Scriptural statements respecting such classes of character, since either the originals may not be present, or, if present, the application might be improperly personal; the pas toral authoritative you, must sink into the modest we; and the whole assume the air of simple discussion, afl'ectionate advice, gentle persuasion, and plain Scrip tural instruction, rather than those elevated features which the family reader could not with propriety adopt, so as to make the sermon his own. This would be no excuse for want of faithfulness or earnestness, but it greatly modifies the style of conveying Scriptural truth. Excerpt from Sermons on Some Leading Points of Christian Doctrine and Duty The accompanying volume is submitted to the public with eh most unaffected diffidence. The author is fully sensible that his position in the Church is not such as to entitle his opinions to much weight; and he has been constrained to feel, that the constantly recurring claims and duties of an extensive charge afford little leisure for elaborate, or even careful, composition. Having, however, been repeatedly requested to print particular sermons, he has been induced to form this collection; although he cannot hope, that it will experience generally that favour and' indulgence, which it is certain to receive from the various members of the very intelligent congregations which it is his privilege to address, and for whose use it is specially intended. Excerpt from Sermons From the Flemish, Vol. 7 The most salutary doctrine among all the sciences of the world is the Christian doctrine or the Cate chism, because by it we are instructed in the one saving grace, and in the practice of Christian justice which, as Cornelius a Lapide remarks, are the true ways to eternal life. Moreover the Christian doc trine is the most useful, because it is the beneficial source of the temporal welfare of men, of the sweet peace of families, and of the well-being of society. We may add that the Christian doctrine is most necessary, inasmuch as without it we cannot be saved. Alas without this spiritual life what would all knowledge profit us? Where are now the ancient philosophers of paganism, the doctors of Israel, those learned men who prided themselves on possessing all sciences and knowledge? (i Cor.i Yes, where are now all those learned men who. Knew all things except that alone which they ought to have known? Where are they? According to the wise sentence of St. Augustine: They are praised where they are not, but tormented where they are. Thus also will even many Christians fare, if they neglect the science of salvation, that is the Christian doctrine. By the Christian doctrine IS meant - the summary of all that Christ has taught, and Christians must know to be saved. A simple Christian who knows such a summary possesses more knowledge of the most exalted truths than Plato or Demosthenes ever possessed.
