While many books describe the emotional and physical damage of eating disorders, this book describes recovery. Psychologist Sheila Reindl has listened intently to women's accounts of recovering and argues that people with bulimia nervosa need to develop a sense of self--to attune to their physical, psychic, and social self-experience.

This thesis describes the working design principles of triboelectric mechanism-based devices. It presents an extensive study undertaken to explain the effect of surface topographies on the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators. It demonstrates the application of triboelectric mechanisms in the area of physical sensing such as force sensing and pressure sensing. It also discusses the major fabrication methods/techniques that can be used to realize these devices. It is a valuable reference resource for graduate students, researchers and scientists interested in exploring the potential of triboelectric mechanisms for energy harvesting and other applications.

Concrete is the second most used building material in the world after water. The problem is that over time the material becomes weaker. As a response, researchers and designers are developing self-sensing concrete which not only increases longevity but also the strength of the material. Self-Sensing Concrete in Smart Structures provides researchers and designers with a guide to the composition, sensing mechanism, measurement, and sensing properties of self-healing concrete along with their structural applications Provides a systematic discussion of the structure of intrinsic self-sensing concrete Compositions of intrinsic self-sensing concrete and processing of intrinsic self-sensing concrete Explains the sensing mechanism, measurement, and sensing properties of intrinsic self-sensing concrete

The science and practice of feeling our movements, sensations, and emotions. When we are first born, before we can speak or use language to express ourselves, we use our physical sensations, our “body sense,” to guide us toward what makes us feel safe and fulfilled and away from what makes us feel bad. As we develop into adults, it becomes easy to lose touch with these crucial mind-body communication channels, but they are essential to our ability to navigate social interactions and deal with psychological stress, physical injury, and trauma. Combining a ground-up explanation of the anatomical and neurological sources of embodied self-awareness with practical exercises in touch and movement, Body Sense provides therapists and their clients with the tools to attain mind-body equilibrium and cultivate healthy body sense throughout their lives.

Self sensing techniques allow using a piezoelectric transducer simultaneously as an actuator and as a sensor, as they reconstruct its mechanical sensory information by measuring its electrical quantities, i.e. voltage and charge. In vibration control applications piezoelectric self sensing actuators are highly desirable as they allow precise collocated control. Past research work was mainly based on the linear behavior of piezoelectric materials, thus restricting the operating driving voltages to low values. This work addresses the problem of using a self sensing piezoelectric actuator at its full driving voltage range. A new self sensing technique is proposed, which is based on the hysteretic modeling and identification of the piezoelectric transducer capacitance. After providing a sound presentation on piezoelectricity and vibrating structures, the most common self sensing techniques are discussed and the new self sensing technique is introduced and compared to typical linear methods both theoretically and experimentally.

Nanomaterials Design for Sensing Applications examines chemosensors, beginning with molecules that are able to respond to certain stimuli and then showing their assembly and incorporation into sensing materials. The mechanisms of their action for the detection of ions, specific molecules and biostructures, are also covered. A major theme is the affordability of sensors, with particular attention paid to inexpensive and reliable colorimetric sensors that can be read by the naked eye. The book also delves into the development of sensors that utilize existing RFID infrastructure and introduces a novel strategy for the development of self-healing sensing platforms. This book will help readers develop a better understanding of the types of materials used for sensing at the nano level, while also providing an insightful overview on recent advances in this important area. Demonstrates how the use of nanomaterials allows for the creation of cheaper, more reliable sensors Shows how metal oxide nanostructures are used as both sensors and supports for embedded organic and organometallic sensing molecules Explores a novel sensing methodology resulting from the integration of nanostructured sensors into radio frequency identification tags

Are aesthetics and politics really two different things? The book takes a new look at how they intertwine, by turning from theory to practice. Case studies trace how sensory experiences are created and how collective interests are shaped. They investigate how aesthetics and politics are entangled, both in building and disrupting collective orders, in governance and innovation. This ranges from populist rallies and artistic activism over alternative lifestyles and consumer culture to corporate PR and governmental policies. Authors are academics and artists. The result is a new mapping of the intermingling and co-constitution of aesthetics and politics in engagements with collective orders.
