Unlike conventional electronics based on inorganic material, organic electronics exploits carbon-based materials such as polymers and small-weight molecules as active components. Organic compounds can be used for creating "bottom-up" molecular architectures using facile solvent-processing techniques, and in this way organic electronics presents a highly flexible and adaptable approach towards the development of functional electronic devices. Self-assembly techniques have evoked particular interest in recent years. These harness weak interactions between molecule, solvent and substrate to create potentially complicated structures with a high degree of molecular order. Polyaromatic hydrocarbons are highly suitable materials to form self-assembled supramolecular architectures for use in electronic devices. These materials have been found to form structures with a very high degree of supramolecular order, such as highly ordered films, molecular crystals and microribbons. These not only exhibit improved electrical properties compared to amorphous (disordered) films, such systems also have an intrinsic capacity to undergo repair of defects and grain boundaries under mild processing conditions, thus avoiding such bottlenecks for charge transport. This thesis will present studies using several methods for forming high aspect-ratio supramolecular architectures, comparing the morphological and electronic properties of these structures with thin films. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed for investigating the supramolecular structure, and OFETs were fabricated in order to determine the transistor properties. The aim was to elucidate the advantages and disadvantages of the various preparation techniques, the degree of long-range molecular order in the resulting structures, their ability to be integrated into devices and the subsequent field-effect characteristics.
