Lower Pennsylvanian rocks in the area of the Teton and the Gros Ventre Ranges have been variously placed in the Tensleep, Wells, and Amsden formations. Studies of the beds in which they are contained inextricably involve, for the present, rocks of Mississippian age, because the boundary between the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems in Wyoming has not been determined ... Where recognizable as a unit the basal Pennsylvanian sandstones and limestones studied in northwestern Wyoming may be correlated with the Upper Amsden formation. Where not distinct lithologically, it seems best to consider them with the Wells formation. The name Lower Amsden is retained for Mississippian beds of questionable age below the Dorwin sandstone of the Amsden formation and for equivalent beds below the Wells formation. The break between the Mississippian and Pennsylvanian systems is tentatively placed at the base of the Dorwin, although it is reconized that there may have been no pause in sedimentation from one period to the next.

Studies of aeolian sediments, both ancient and modern, have exhibited a number of important conceptual advances in recent years. In particular, there has been a move away from descriptions of sediments, bedforms and sedimentary environments toward a new emphasis on the dynamics of aeolian depositional systems at different temporal and spatial scales, and their response to external changes in sea levels, regional and global climates and tectonics. This Special Publication contains a selection of papers that were presented at the Symposium "Aeolian Sediments: Ancient and Modern" held in 1990. It also includes a number of contributions from authors who were not able to attend the meeting, but whose work reflects important aspects of contemporary research in aeolian sedimentology.
