Growing up on a council estate and going from being bullied, to the bully, Danny’s life is set to go down one road, prison. Enrolling into the Army should have been the making of him, but after a traumatic event in the middle east, Danny had no idea how vulnerable his mind could be as he tries to tell his story of events that leads him down a rabbit hole of alien abduction and conspiracies he could never have imagined existed. “Hi, my name is Danny Bridges, and I can tell you one thing. Do not believe a word anyone tells you about aliens unless it is, they are real because from what I have just experienced I never thought they could mess up my life like they have. I am the one you see. They want people like me who have that certain extra intelligence like I have. Got me locked up but that is only the half of it as I will try to explain it to you. The world is under threat and these alien geezers want change to come and for people like me, young and prime to do their bidding once they have brainwashed me, but I am not having it. I will fight to the last breath to stop this happening and if I were you, I’d be careful who you trust because they could be knocking on your door next. I thought I was just a nobody once. A council estate lad from Tameworth with nothing more than my streets to get me by. What a joke that is. Why they wanted me I will explain because I am as sane as you guys. I am not a psychopath or multiple personality dood, I am a regular guy going about his life until this alien stuff kicked off as I will explain. We are not alone guys and once you read my account of the events so far, you had better look over your shoulder the next time you think you are being watched. Because you probably are being watched but not by government bods, by Aliens who want to take over your mind as they are trying to take over mine.”

It seems the Halloween season starts earlier and earlier each year. I first began noticing Halloween candy in stores in July (!), and every time I turned around since then, there were more decorations, party favors, and treats at hand. Is it any wonder I’ve been wandering around the house humming “The Monster Mash” for the last few weeks? Our 108th issue kicks off a truly epic celebration of the season, with a pair of nightmarish treats. You will never look at seagulls the same way after experiencing Adrian Cole’s “The Birds Are Back in Town.” And Lin Carter’s “Keru” is a tale that would have been right at home in Weird Tales in its heyday. “The Power of Evil,” by Alan Orloff, is not a supernatural tale, but futuristic suspense (thanks to Acquiring Editor Michael Bracken), so it’s doing double duty this time. And the grisly-sounding “A Burn That Reaches Bone,” by Karen Odden is not a mad slasher tale, but a tale of a horrible crime that reaches through the generations. (Thanks to Acquiring Editor Barb Goffman for this one.) And, of course, there are traditional mysteries, too—I found a rare Victorian-era mystery by Australian writer Ernest Favenc while I was browsing issues of Australian Town and Country Journal looking for mysteries by Mary Fortune (my favorite classic Australian mystery writer) and couldn’t resist adding it to this issue. Plus we have a detective novel featuring Nick Carter and a solve-it-yourself puzzler from Hal Charles. On the science fiction and fantasy side, we have another great Norman Spinrad story, a classic by Robert F. Young, and the first entry in the Pillsworth & Toffee series by Charles F. Myers (we have more coming up). Fun stuff Here’s the complete lineup: Mysteries / Suspense / Adventure: “The Power of Evil,” by Alan Orloff [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “Swimming into Troubled Waters,” by Hal Charles [Solve-It-Yourself Mystery] “A Burn That Reaches Bone,” by Karen Odden [Barb Goffman Presents short story] “The Mystery of the Death Stroke,” by Ernest Favenc The Forced Crime, by Nicholas Carter [novel] Science Fiction & Fantasy: “The Power of Evil,” by Alan Orloff [Michael Bracken Presents short story] “Entities,” by Norman Spinrad [short story] “The Birds Are Back in Town” is copyright © 2019 by Adrian Cole [short story] “The Courts of Jamshyd,” by Robert F. Young [short story] “Keru,” by Lin Carter “I’ll Dream of You” by Charles F. Myers [short story]

From a pair of New York Times bestselling authors with unparalleled access comes an in-depth account of the manhunt for Joran van der Sloot, one of the most reviled accused criminals in the world In May 2005, Natalee Holloway disappeared from a high school trip to Aruba. Five years to the day later, twenty-one-year-old Stephany Flores was reported missing in Lima, Peru. Implicated in both crimes was one young man: Joran van der Sloot. A twenty-three-year-old Dutchman, Van der Sloot has become the subject of intense scrutiny by the media and the public in the years since 2005. He was arrested and detained by Aruban authorities in connection with the Holloway disappearance, only to be released after questioning. In 2008, during a Dutch sting operation, he admitted to being present for Holloway's death---but later recanted his statement. In 2010, on the five-year anniversary of her disappearance, a young business student in Peru named Stephany Flores disappeared, only to be found dead three days later in a hotel room---registered to Van der Sloot. He was arrested for the murder and confessed, but he later claimed he was coerced. This is the first book to offer a probing look at the man tied to two of the most sensational cases of the decade. It draws from: • Interviews with members of the families of Joran, Stephany, and Natalee • Never-before-seen photographs of the crime scene in Peru, fingerprint files, hotel records, and more • Internal communications between Interpol, the FBI, Aruban officials, and officials in Chile and Peru • Never-before-seen police files from Chile, Peru, and Aruba Portrait of a Monster offers an unflinching look into the workings of an international manhunt and a chilling portrait of an alleged killer.

Back in the eighties, things were way different than today. There was no such thing as mobile phones for one and certainly not the internet we know today. If you were a teenager today, you would probably be thinking how did we manage? To be honest, technology has passed my adult life by and tied me down to this life. I like my privacy and enjoyed my teenage years because I remember them like they were yesterday. They were unfettered by this need to always be found or are active on social media. My name is Danny Shaw and I have lived and breathed in my life in Tameworth. It is a small town a little fucked-up and one weekend, me and bros had the biggest laugh you will ever come across. Me and Freddie Green were known locally as Bong ‘Edz because we smoked way too much weed back then and we sold a bit too. We had dreams of making it big back then and be two geezers who no one messed with and we would make sheds loads of dollar and both have big fat Beamers (A pimped out BMW) so when a little oink called Murray gave us the head-ups on a field full of weed he found, we thought those dreams were just around the corner in the craziest weekend we ever had. A weekend I will never forget. Growing up on a council estate may not be the best start in life but for me, it was reality. It was the mid-eighties. A time of dreams of what we could be and more importantly, how we survived day-to-day with just our wits and a little luck that had so far been good for me and my mate Freddie. My future was bright, back then, I think! How old am I now? Honestly, I do not know. My head is in a bad place right now and ironically it was not through smoking weed. It would seem choices in my life were down to my so-called friend Freddie as I unwittingly find out during our weekend as cowardly teenagers unfold as we discover the field of dreams.
