Diaspora studies have tended to privilege urban landscapes over rural ones, wanting to avoid the racial homogeneity, conservatism, and xenophobia usually associated with the latter. This book examines the work of various writers to show how it expresses the appeal that rural and wilderness spaces can hold for the diasporic imagination.

This comprehensive introduction to rock mechanics treats the basics of rock mechanics in a clear and straightforward manner and discusses important design problems in terms of the mechanics of materials. This extended second edition includes an additional chapter on rock bursts and bumps, a part on basic dynamics, and numerous additional examples and exercises throughout the chapters. Developed for a complete class in rock engineering, Design Analysis in Rock Mechanics, Second Edition uniquely combines the design of surface and underground rock excavations and addresses: Rock slope stability in surface excavations, from planar block and wedge slides to rotational and toppling failures Shaft and tunnel stability, ranging from naturally supported openings to analysis and design of artificial support and reinforcement systems Entries and pillars in stratified ground Three-dimensional caverns, with an emphasis on cable bolting and backfill Geometry and forces of chimney caving, combination support, and trough subsidence Rock bursts and bumps in underground excavations, with a focus on dynamic phenomena and on fast and sometimes catastrophic failures The numerous exercises and examples familiarize the reader with solving basic practical problems in rock mechanics through various design analysis techniques and their applications. Supporting the main text, appendices provide supplementary information about rock, joint, and composite properties, rock mass classification schemes, useful formulas, and an extensive literature list. The large selection of problems at the end of each chapter can be used for homework assignments. Explanatory and illustrative in character, this volume is suited for courses in rock mechanics, rock engineering and geological engineering design for undergraduate and first-year graduate students in mining, civil engineering, and applied earth sciences. Moreover, it will form a good introduction to the subject of rock mechanics for earth scientists and engineers from other disciplines.

Indian Arrivals 1870-1915: Networks of British Empire examines how at the height of empire Britain was threaded through with Indian influences and ideas, in spite of colonial divisions. Throughout, the study is motivated by the notion that Indian travellers learned from the friendships they made in the west but also that they contributed to the development of a late Victorian cosmopolitanism of which they were an intrinsic part. Tracing the intricateencounters that took place between 'arriving' Indians and their British hosts, often through the medium of literature and journalism, the book paints a more textured picture than has been available to date ofcross-cultural contact between Indians and Britons and in so doing explores the myriad ways in which the centre of the nineteenth-century imperial world was criss-crossed by its margins, just as the margins were by the centre. Indian Arrivals offers a sustained reflection on what it is to arrive in another culture, in all senses of the word.

This two-volume set on Mathematical Principles of the Internet provides a comprehensive overview of the mathematical principles of Internet engineering. The books do not aim to provide all of the mathematical foundations upon which the Internet is based. Instead, these cover only a partial panorama and the key principles. Volume 1 explores Internet engineering, while the supporting mathematics is covered in Volume 2. The chapters on mathematics complement those on the engineering episodes, and an effort has been made to make this work succinct, yet self-contained. Elements of information theory, algebraic coding theory, cryptography, Internet traffic, dynamics and control of Internet congestion, and queueing theory are discussed. In addition, stochastic networks, graph-theoretic algorithms, application of game theory to the Internet, Internet economics, data mining and knowledge discovery, and quantum computation, communication, and cryptography are also discussed. In order to study the structure and function of the Internet, only a basic knowledge of number theory, abstract algebra, matrices and determinants, graph theory, geometry, analysis, optimization theory, probability theory, and stochastic processes, is required. These mathematical disciplines are defined and developed in the books to the extent that is needed to develop and justify their application to Internet engineering.

600 km giving insight into the 3D structure of the upper mantle. These data are confronted with the requirements of the CTBT for 3D regional seismic models of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system. The two primary purposes of the present work are, first, to present these seismic observations on super long-range profiles in digitised format, using peaceful nuclear explosions (PNE) in the former USSR, and, second, to present the joint thoughts of experts from the deep seismic sounding (DSS) and the comprehensive test ban treaty (CTBT) communities. Implications for petrological and other earth science disciplines are presented. Audience: The CTBT community and earth scientists interested in the 3D structure of the lithosphere-asthenosphere system.
