Searches for the direct electroweak production of supersymmetric charginos, neutralinos, and sleptons in a variety of signatures with leptons and $\mathrm{W}$, $\mathrm{Z}$, and Higgs bosons are presented. Results are based on a sample of proton-proton collision data collected at center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=8\, \mathrm{TeV}$ with the CMS detector in 2012, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.5 $\, \text {fb}^\text {-1}$ . The observed event rates are in agreement with expectations from the standard model. These results probe charginos and neutralinos with masses up to 720 $\, \text {GeV}$, and sleptons up to 260 $\, \text {GeV}$, depending on the model details.

This thesis discusses searches for electroweakly produced supersymmetric partners of the gauge and the Higgs bosons (gauginos and higgsinos) decaying to multiple leptons, using pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. The thesis presents an in-depth study of multiple searches, as well as the first 13 TeV cross section measurement for the dominant background in these searches, WZ production. Two searches were performed using 36.1/fb of data: the gaugino search, which makes use of a novel kinematic variable, and the higgsino search, which produced the first higgsino limits at the LHC. A search using 139/fb of data makes use of a new technique developed in this thesis to cross check an excess of data above the background expectation in a search using a Recursive Jigsaw Reconstruction technique. None of the searches showed a significant excess of data, and limits were expanded with respect to previous results. These searches will benefit from the addition of luminosity during HL-LHC; however, the current detector will not be able to withstand the increase in radiation. Electronics for the detector upgrade are tested and irradiated to ensure their performance.

Results are presented from a search for the electroweak production of supersymmetric particles in pp collisions in final states with two tau leptons. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity between 18.1 inverse femtobarns and 19.6 inverse femtobarns at sqrt(s) = 8 TeV, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected standard model backgrounds. The results are interpreted using simplified models describing the pair production and decays of charginos or tau sleptons. For chargino pair production, assuming that the third-generation sleptons are the lightest sleptons and that their masses lie midway between that of the chargino and the lightest neutralino, an excluded region in the plane of the neutralino mass vs. chargino mass is obtained. Chargino masses below 420 GeV are excluded at a 95% confidence level in the limit of a massless neutralino, and for neutralino masses up to 100 GeV, chargino masses up to 325 GeV are excluded at 95% confidence level. Constraints are also placed on the cross section for pair production of tau sleptons as a function of mass, assuming a massless neutralino.

We present results of a search for the electroweak associated production of charginos and next-to-lightest neutralinos, pairs of charginos or pairs of tau sleptons. These processes are characterised by final states with at least two hadronically decaying tau leptons, missing transverse momentum and low jet activity. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 8TeV recorded with the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. We observed no significant excess with respect to the predictions from Standard Model processes. Limits are set at 95% confidence level on the masses of the lighter chargino and next-to-lightest neutralino for various hypotheses for the lightest neutralino mass in simplified models. In the scenario of direct production of chargino pairs, with each chargino decaying into the lightest neutralino via an intermediate tau slepton, chargino masses up to 345 GeV are excluded for a massless lightest neutralino. For associated production of mass-degenerate charginos and next-tolightest neutralinos, both decaying into the lightest neutralino via an intermediate tau slepton, masses up to 410 GeV are excluded for a massless lightest neutralino.

This book provides a self-contained description of the measurements of the magnetic dipole moments of the electron and muon, along with a discussion of the measurements of the fine structure constant, and the theory associated with magnetic and electric dipole moments. Also included are the searches for a permanent electric dipole moment of the electron, muon, neutron and atomic nuclei. The related topic of the transition moment for lepton flavor violating processes, such as neutrinoless muon or tauon decays, and the search for such processes are included as well. The authors present a search for the associated production of charginos and neutralinos in p{bar p} collisions at (square root)s = 1.96 TeV. The data were collected at the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF II) and correspond to integrated luminosities between 0.7 and 1.0 fb−1. They look for final states with one high-p{sub T} electron or muon, and two additional leptons. The results are consistent with the standard model expectations, and they set limits on the cross section as a function of the chargino mass in three different supersymmetric scenarios. For a specific MSSM scenario with no slepton mixing they set a 95% C.L. limit at 151 GeV/c2.
