Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2009 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Allgemeines, Note: Sehr Gut, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck (Institut für Geschichte), Veranstaltung: SE Schrift und Schriftlichkeit im Mittelalter, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Bildung im Mittelalter ging hauptsächlich ohne Schrift und “Schreiben können” von Statten und war auch kein Bestandteil des täglichen Lebens. Für unsere heutige Zeit ist dies völlig undenkbar, da die Beherrschung von Schrift zur Grundvorraussetzung zum Funktionieren unserer Gesellschaft gehört und ein Analphabet als minderbegabt stigmatisiert und in Folge dessen oft ausgegrenzt wird. In der Welt des Mittelalters hingegen waren beinahe alle Teile der Bevölkerung Analphabeten und es war kein Manko. Für ein besseres Verständnis des mittelalterlichen Bildungsgedanken, ist es nötig, sich von unserem humanistischen oder auch “Humboldtschen” Bildundsideal zu entfernen. Das Wort "Bildung", oder besser “pildunga”, wie es im Althochdeutschem hieß, bedeutete im Mittelalter "Bildnis" oder auch "Schöpfung" und es gab keine direkte lateinische Entsprechung dafür. Es war vielmehr eine ganze Reihe von Wörtern, die die mittelalterliche Bildungswelt umschrieb: Durch erziehen und unterrichten (instruere und eruditio) gelangte man zur Klugheit (prudentia) und erreichte im Idealfall die Weisheit oder auch Einsicht (sapientia). Des Weiteren spielten noch Erkenntnis (cognitio) und Vernunft (ratio) für das Verständnis der Bibel eine große Rolle. Den Frauen sprach man eine ratio jedoch prinzipiell ab, weil ihre “intellektuellen Fähigkeiten von Natur aus geringer eingeschätzt wurden”, damit waren sie nicht in der Lage, “zur Erkenntnis Gottes zu gelangen”. Denn “nach herrschender Auffassung war es ihnen unmöglich, den Intellekt von Affekten und körperlichen Bedürfnisssen zu trennen”, dies war nur den männlichen Klerus vorbehalten. Um dieses Manko auszugleichen, wurde bei den Frauen die weibliche Unberührtheit ausschlaggebend für eine Annäherung zu Gott.

This book provides new insights into the creation and use of written texts in medieval Japan. Drawing upon lawsuits from Ategawa no shō in central Japan between the early eleventh and early fourteenth centuries, the author analyses the use of writing by various social groups - temple priests, warriors and peasants. Though these social groups had different levels of literacy and accordingly followed different communicative traditions, their use of writing had common features. In the semi-literate society of medieval Japan the dissemination and reception of written texts took place primarily through speaking and hearing. Documents of the medieval period therefore had a distinctly oral characteristic. Priests, warriors and peasants all alluded to motifs in their legal pleas that were in essence given by the oral world of tales, legends and gossip. By showing that literacy was not in conflict but interacted with orality, the author uncovers an important aspect of the use of the written word in medieval Japan.
