The Nebraska Repertory Theatre, in partnership with the Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, designated Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie as its second production for the 2019-2020 season. The production began previews on Wednesday, November 06, opened Friday, November 08, and ended their run on Sunday, November 17, 2019. As the lighting designer for this production, it was my responsibility to provide the master electrician with the plans and paperwork necessary to physically realize my artist vision. This included a drawn-to-scale light plot, channel hookup, and instrument schedule denoting the placement of lighting equipment as well as any accessories needed. This thesis will analyze the participation of the lighting designer, starting with the preliminary vision, continuing with the conceptual design and concludes with a summation of the process. Following the conclusion of my thesis are the research, paperwork, and photo documentation which help support the information presented within the thesis.

This thesis presents new ways of looking at an old classic by illuminating the emotions and hardship of the Wingfield family through the use of color and texture. The Glass Menagerie by Tennessee Williams was presented at the University of Arkansas in September of 2017. The challenges of this production will be addressed as well as the achievements and areas of improvement of this production. Finally, this document will answer the question: How does color, texture, and the angle of stage lighting help heighten the emotions of the characters and engage an audience in the play? Included are all the documents critical for the lighting design process including, but not limited to: light plot, magic sheet, cue sheets, and research images. Production photographs are included and referenced throughout the paper to help further illustrate the design approach.

This document is a written account of the design and production process for Southern Illinois University Carbondale's production of The Glass Menagerie. The project ran for one weekend in October of 2011. The first chapter consists of a textual and character analysis as well as my own goals for the production. Chapter Two describes the process of designing The Glass Menagerie from just prior to the first design meeting through opening night. The third and final chapter is a self-evaluation of the process and the final product. The text of the document is followed by appendices containing research/inspirational imagery, the lighting plot and relevant paperwork, and production photographs.
