When cultures such as ours toss Jesus out one door, He comes in – albeit disguised – through another. That’s why author Jim Papandrea turned to Star Wars, Star Trek, The Matrix, Terminator, Spider-Man, Batman, Dr. Who, and half-a-dozen other modern shows, discovering in each one powerful images of Christ and salvation. Nor is that surprising. In stories of alternative universes, people always need rescuing; somebody needs to save the day; and sometimes the whole world cries out for a savior . . . which is just what a hero is. About the heroes of some of the most popular sci-fi stories of all time, author Papandrea here answers questions that concern Christians who are also Trekkies, Whovians, Matrix Dwellers, or aficionados of popular science fiction: What kind of “Christ-figure” is the hero of this story, and what does that say about the show’s vision of Christ, humanity and salvation? In the interest of being scientific, Papandrea even gives each hero a Numerical Orthodoxy Score based on the description of Christ in the Nicene Creed, Christianity’s common definition of orthodoxy. Included herein are astute Christian analyses of: Batman * Captain * America * Doctor Who * The Fifth Element * I, Robot * Iron Man * LOST * The Matrix * Planet of the Apes * Pleasantville * Spider-Man * Star Trek * Star Wars * Superman * The Terminator * The Time Machine * Tron * Wonder Woman Here you’ll read about: The pervasive Christian imagery in Doctor WhoStar Trek’s predicted “death of God”Free-will: the stumbling block in the first MatrixThe crucifixion of Spider-ManWhy Wonder Woman is an image of a gnostic saviorThe meaning of salvation in Star Wars (It masquerades as Christian)How Superman’s life begins as a parallel of Moses.I, Robot: the religious reason why the robot is called “Sonny”Whether, in any Christian sense, Neo is The One?Captain American and Iron-Man: one defends the innocent, the other brings justice to the guiltyThe tomb scene in the Fifth Element: it’s not the resurrection we needMatter vs. Spirit in Tron: gnostic to the coreThe anti-Christian bias of Planet of the ApesWhy the Force in Star Wars is no analogy to Grace or the Holy SpiritThe Star Wars Christ figure: Obi-Wan? Luke? Or even, ultimately, Darth VaderWhat Heaven is understood to be in the LOST universeTime travel as incarnation in The Terminator: a compelling analogyRegeneration as resurrection in Doctor Who: Is it Christ-like?How Pleasantville reverses the dynamism of the FallThe baptismal significance of the plane crash in LOSTPleasantville: a twisted version of EdenThe incarnation of the Christ-figure in Planet of the ApesTron’s parallels between Christianity and the Roman Empire . . . and much more about other science fiction and superhero shows! Christians who enjoy popular culture will greet this fun book with interest and acclaim.

This book is a good read that raises several thought-provoking points, with a few points of humor and several of nostalgia thrown in. Superman and Jesus have many similarities: They both come from other worlds, raised by humans, sent out to discover themselves, and provide hope to the world. Is this because of who they are....or how their stories are told? Similar to Joseph (Hero of a Thousand Faces/Power of Myth) Campbell's work in Mythology, this book looks into Jesus and Superman's journeys being linked by a thread of storytelling that spans time and many other hero characters; including Batman, Spider-Man, and Luke Skywalker. If you've wondered why Jesus' story is told the way it is in the four gospels, perhaps looking at the story of Superman can shed some light.

An instant hit from his first appearance, Superman's popularity has grown through the decades — and today he is known worldwide as the defender of Truth, Justice and the American Way. But his earliest stories reveal a Superman who took no prisoners, made his own laws and gleefully delivered his own brand of justice — even if it meant dangling a crook by the ankle from above the city, or giving a wife-beater a taste of his own medicine. This was a Superman who embodied pure wish fulfillment, with his early adventures showing a raw super-hero in the making — and the development of an enduring classic! DC Comics is proud to present this definitive and affordable collection of Superman's first stories. Assembled here are his earliest adventures from ACTION COMICS #1-13, NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR COMICS #1 and SUPERMAN #1 — including all covers. For fans of the Man of Steel, both old and new — or of popular culture in general — THE SUPERMAN CHRONICLES is an indispensable addition to any library!

This dissertation defines and explores the concept of superhero monstrosity through an analysis of the character Superman, the television series italicSmallvilleitalic, and several other post-2000 superhero films and television shows. 0́Monstrosity0́+ is my term for the superhero's corruption by internal or external forces that overturn his role as a protector and reveal the anxieties at the heart of the genre. The genre foundationally counteracts anxieties regarding the corruption of the powerful and the impotence of the average person by creating superhuman figures who protect the weak, seem incorruptible, and allow the audience to experience power vicariously. However, these anxieties constantly reappear in the form of stories featuring monstrous superheroes. I do a historical overview of the genre to show that, though monstrosity is a component from the beginning, it does not become a central aspect until after 1960 in comic books and 2000 in film and television. Most of the dissertation is focused on the television series italicSmallvilleitalic because it embodies the post-2000 shift to monstrous superheroes in mainstream media, as even Superman, the first and most unchanging superhero, struggles with destructive tendencies. Specifically, I look at how the program's pre-Superman Clark Kent goes through a super form of puberty that results in him repeatedly losing control of his body and exhibiting potential to grow into a villain. Moreover, I analyze cases in which the superhero turns into a completely immoral monster (a 0́superhero-gone-bad0́+) on italicSmallvilleitalicand in several superhero films. These totally corrupted superheroes engage the genre's anxieties and fantasies in an exaggerated way. In proving my argument, I do close analysis of formal and narrative elements of various episodes of italicSmallvilleitalic, as well as several other films, TV shows, and comic books. In addition, I look at fan reactions (primarily on the internet) to gauge what makes monstrous superheroes appealing and frightening, and what a successful depiction demands. In the end, what I hope to show is how changes in cultural sensibilities and the superhero genre result in renditions of protagonists who are both heroes and destroyers on Smallville and in other post-2000 films and TV shows.
