Soura's village survived the harshest of ages, prospered in peace and shielded from the cruel world behind the puzzling dark phenomenon cast by the worshiped Mystical Moon. She and her friends longed for something brightened their boring dull days, something much more exciting than running through the flower fields. That's what led them to take a peek at a mysterious stranger, but their fascination quickly turned to dread, fear and slaughter. The monsters she thought only existed in myths now roamed before her eyes.A extraordinary battle, human or demons? A eerie feeling, a unexplained power awakened by exploding rage. Her home was no longer safe, she was no longer shielded from monsters and Soura was the very reason they appeared.Excerpt:At a normal tree length they positioned, Leon to the right, the stranger to the left. Both already had their weapons out and forward, though only Leon was a firm fighting stance. It was one customary for a swordsman, the legs apart with a tight grip made on the hilt. The stranger stood plainly holding the spear upright the shining blade above his black hood. This offended Leon, he glowered at him grunting. "You can't defend against an opponent by just lingering," Leon told him.We then heard a smirk release. He reached for the hood on his head and immediately we knew what he would do next so we snuck closer to get a good look. After he had unmasked himself I could honestly say we weren't the least prepared for what we saw. I couldn't have been further taken aback as my mouth hung open for the gasp come out when the boy, not man, has we'd believe tugged down the hood of his cape. He had raven dark that waved smooth to his ears, fair skin slightly blemished by cutting scars. He wore a smug grin. My lashes batted like wings of a butterfly, I blinked so many times to make sure I was imagining Leon about fight a different form of himself."Heavens, you're..." Leon voice peeled then faded expressing his sheer shock."A boy of sixteen, I gather you're the same," he said, "my, such a fine stance. You really do want to be nobleman bad." "Excuse me."The dark haired boy's grin spread wider after seeing how Leon's angry reaction. It should've been funny but I was doing too much pondering to be amused at the beads of sweat surfacing on Leon's forehead. He was angry yet nervous. He might've actually been thinking what I was. Why was a boy of just sixteen traveling alone? And did he only accidently stumbled upon our village? Why wasn't journey through up our clouded mist hills? It was simple unheard of for youngling having that kind of courage. My curiosity grew stronger while noticing confidence he had. His spear was still left upright, how he looked at Leon's sword, as well as him, was astoundingly calm and fearless, like a boy not even afraid of getting hurt."I bet you sometimes wish you were born from a countess' womb and not your mother's. You'd be much more thankful for life as a young lord, wouldn't you?""Dirty! Insolent! Vagabond," Leon yelled enraged, charging at the boy with the fury of a wild boar. With the taunting grin stuck to his scarred face he remained where he stood until Leon came near enough. He swag a forward strike and swiftly the boy spun on his heel, cape floating in the breeze, while he dodged the strike before flipping the spear equally swift. The bottom end of the spear hit the back of Leon's leg. "Whoa," Lanz gaped astonished. That one hit ruined his balance causing him fall humiliatingly on his knees. The sword slipped from his hands which he hastened to regain, a clear blow to his pride than a leg. The four of us froze mirroring Lanz's expression. Of course, the astonishment had mountains less to do with our disappointment in Leon and exceedingly centered on our overwhelmed amazement by the other boy's sharp and quick deflection. He flicked the long weapon so brilliantly but still in a way that made it seem as if he was a child testing his new toy.

From the author of Good Muslim, Bad Muslim comes an important book, unlike any other, that looks at the crisis in Darfur within the context of the history of Sudan and examines the world’s response to that crisis. In Saviors and Survivors, Mahmood Mamdani explains how the conflict in Darfur began as a civil war (1987—89) between nomadic and peasant tribes over fertile land in the south, triggered by a severe drought that had expanded the Sahara Desert by more than sixty miles in forty years; how British colonial officials had artificially tribalized Darfur, dividing its population into “native” and “settler” tribes and creating homelands for the former at the expense of the latter; how the war intensified in the 1990s when the Sudanese government tried unsuccessfully to address the problem by creating homelands for tribes without any. The involvement of opposition parties gave rise in 2003 to two rebel movements, leading to a brutal insurgency and a horrific counterinsurgency–but not to genocide, as the West has declared. Mamdani also explains how the Cold War exacerbated the twenty-year civil war in neighboring Chad, creating a confrontation between Libya’s Muammar al-Qaddafi (with Soviet support) and the Reagan administration (allied with France and Israel) that spilled over into Darfur and militarized the fighting. By 2003, the war involved national, regional, and global forces, including the powerful Western lobby, who now saw it as part of the War on Terror and called for a military invasion dressed up as “humanitarian intervention.” Incisive and authoritative, Saviors and Survivors will radically alter our understanding of the crisis in Darfur.

Holding the small island of Malta, the British Empire's strategic centerpiece in the Mediterranean Sea, was critical to the Allied cause in World War II--and taking it was essential for Axis victory. German forces laid siege to the island beginning in June 1940, and it soon became the most bombed place on Earth. By August 1942, with supplies running out, Malta was in dire need of relief. In what was then the largest Royal Navy force yet assembled in the war, two battleships, three aircraft carriers, seven light cruisers, 32 destroyers and a fleet of transports were mustered from far-flung theaters. This day-by-day account of Operation Pedestal chronicles the planning, execution and climactic battle that saw only five of 14 merchant ships make it to Valletta, all but one heavily damaged.
