When Satan prompted men His father's house to burn, "On his father's arrival atEpworth, he found the inhabitants profligate and addicted to vices which had long triumphed without any restraint. Being unable to bear the faithful preaching of their new pastor, they meditated revenge; and, one night, while he and his family were in bed, these incendiaries actually set his house on fire," Imperial Mag., 1824. The fire occurred on Wednesday night, February 9th, 1709, between eleven and twelve o'clock. He was then about six years of age. The following is his own account: --"Seeing the room was very light, I called to the maid to take me up; but none answering, I put my head out of the curtains and saw streaks of fire on the top of the room. I got up and ran to the door, but could get no farther--all the floor beyond it being in a blaze. I then climbed upon a chest which stood near the window. One in l.he yard saw me, and proposed running to fetch a ladder. Another answered, ' There will b no time; but I have thought of another expedient. Here, I will fix myself against the wall: lift a light man and set hint on my shoulders.' They did so, and he took me out of the window. Just then, the whole roof fell in; but it fell inward, or we had all been crushed at once." How little thought he then, That God would have His turn! Despite his raging ire, Would here his truth proclaim, And kindle holy fire, Around the world to flame. That fire-imperill'd " John" Would rise to man's estate; And, on this solemn stone, His throne of darkness shake.
