Being unable to bear the faithful preaching of their new pastor, they meditated revenge; and, one night, while he and his family were in bed, these incendiaries actually set his house on fire," Imperial Mag., 1824. The fire occurred on Wednesday night, February 9th, 1709, between eleven and twelve o'clock. He was then about six years of age. The following is his own account: --"Seeing the room was very light, I called to the maid to take me up; but none answering, I put my head out of the curtains and saw streaks of fire on the top of the room. I got up and ran to the door, but could get no farther--all the floor beyond it being in a blaze. I then climbed upon a chest which stood near the window.
