Excerpt from Russia Before and After the War Twenty years ago, Prince Dolgorouki, the author of 'La Verite sur la Russie, ' prefaced his indictment against the administration of his country with the remark, 'A book on Russia must be by a Russian; my country resembling no other.' Largely as our knowledge of Russia has increased during this eventful interval, the observation still holds good. It is of some importance, therefore, that English readers should know that the author of the work, now translated, with some additions, from the lately published German original, not only writes with the authority of one familiar with the conditions of social and political life in Russia, but deals with the subject as a Russian. Opinions proceeding from such a source have a representative value of their own, irrespective in one sense of the views of foreign critics, but none the less indispensable for a calm and impartial estimate of the circumstances which have directed the attention of Europe to a State as unique in its composition as it is exceptional in its historical development. Excerpt from Russia and the Great War The success obtained with the British public by my work on Modern Russia, of which the second edition followed the first in the space of ten months, has inspired me with courage once more to address my readers in a book devoted to my country. The subject of this new book is Russia and the Great War. But in writing it I wished not merely to write a book for the moment ex elusively, of value only for today, and of no interest to-morrow. It is net the external and dramatic aspect of the great war waged by Russia and her Allies that interests me the most. On the contrary, my readers will find in my pages neither descriptions of battles nor tragic or picturesque narratives of the incidents of battle. My aim has been something quite different from this. I wish to inform my English readers con cerning the principal phenomena of Russian life before the War, and to explain the relations be tween these phenomena and the war itself. Excerpt from Russia After the Revolution This is a two-fold tale. First it is the personal story of a forty-six thousand mile trip, sixteen thou sand miles of which were covered in Russia, Persia, and Turkey during war, revolution, and famine. The journey was undertaken by Dr. William T. Ellis and myself as Commissioners for the American Com mittee for Armenian and Syrian Relief, entrusted with the duty of looking into the distress of the refu gee peoples in the Caucasus and neighboring lands. In addition, at the request of the American Red Cross Mission to Russia, We made an investigation of the Red Cross needs on the Caucasus front, which we visited in Persia and at several places in Turkey as the guests of the Russian Army. Excerpt from History of the War Against Russia Individually, I placed myself on the ground to the left of the enemy's main attack, and Opposite to his right, finding that I could at that point best direct any move ments in which the third division could be called upon to partake; and I remained there the whole day, with the exception of making one rapid visit to the positions belonging to us on the left, for the security of which I considered myself equally responsible. The vigilance of the officers, however, who I had left in charge of that ground relieved me as to all apprehensions for its safety. Excerpt from War and Revolution in Russia, 1914-1917 IN the midst of profound peace, in the active work of economical and social reform, Russia, as by thunderbolt, was struck by the news of approaching mobilisation, and by the urgent necessity of having recourse to the sword to protect her interests and those of the other Slav nations. To define exactly the position in which the beginning of the war found Russia, it is necessary briefly to survey her political condition at the moment. The country was still feeling the disturbing effects of the Revolution of 1905 - 6. The intellectual classes which had now received access to and obtained a share in political life and legislation, were engrossed by the struggle with the Government. This tur moil centred specially in the Imperial Duma. With the opening of military action this internal strife of the parties, as in other European countries, and the striving for suprem acy between the Imperial Duma and the Government, died down at first, but later became gradually acute again. This, we observe, was the case with all our Allies and in a certain degree with our enemies. After three years of war, this struggle, becoming still more acute, brought about a crisis which ended in the Revolution of March 1917.
