The well-being of rural communities affects the well-being of those who reside in towns and cities because of rural-urban connections through food, drinking water, infectious disease, extreme environmental events, recreation, and for many, retirement residence. Rural women's cancer screening utilization is a complex issue, particularly for older women with limited social ties. The community health worker (CHW) model is a proven public health approach; it is underpinned in social network and social support theories. Numerous studies about the CHW role exist from the worker perspective; however, little is known from the client perspective. This current study describes the client view of actions and social support provided by CHWs and subsequent impact on rural women's cancer screening practices over time. Five rural women aged 46-59 were interviewed face-to-face in this qualitative study. Pseudonyms were applied to ensure participant confidentiality. Findings concluded that CHW actions and social support combined with CHW persistence mediated compelling and deterring factors, leading to a mental shift about cancer screening; ultimately, resulting in cancer screening engagement, becoming cancer screening advocates, and endorsers of an early detection program two years after CHW involvement.

This scholarly book focuses on stroke in Africa. Stroke is a leading cause of disability among adults of all ages, contributing significantly to health care costs related to long term implications, particularly if rehabilitation is sub-optimal. Given the burden of stroke in Africa, there is a need for a book that focuses on functioning African stroke survivors and the implications for rehabilitation within the African context. In addition, there is a need to progress with contextualised, person-centred, evidence-based guidance for the rehabilitation of people with stroke in Africa, thereby enabling them to lead socially and economically meaningful lives. The research incorporated in the book used a range of primary and secondary methodological approaches (scoping reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, descriptive studies, surveys, health economics, and clinical practice guideline methodology) to shed new insights into African-centred issues and strategies to optimise function post-stroke.
