Optimal rumble strips/stripes are critical to ensure traffic safety and simultaneously avoid disturbance to the surrounding environment. In this project, we have utilized a commercial Finite Element modeling tool to calculate the amount of noise in the tires while rolling over the rumble strips. The sound level is determined within the tire cavity. We have evaluated three types of designs: conventional, sinusoidal, and sawtooth. In total, we have simulated 19 conventional designs, 21 sinusoidal designs, and 6 sawtooth designs at 3 varying vehicle speeds for a passenger car and a truck tire. We have observed that the sinusoidal designs produced lower sound outputs than the conventional designs, and the sawtooth designs with a longer wavelength produced similar sound outputs to a sinusoidal design at the same depth. Furthermore, we have developed a non-zero angle of landing for different conventional and sinusoidal designs. Overall, our numerical simulations produced expected trends in the sound outputs for different rumble strip dimensions. Furthermore, when a chosen sound output level is determined, a specific dimension can be found among the simulated cases to guide the construction.

Studies have shown that rumble strips installed on a roadway significantly reduce the number of accidents caused by lane departures. However, when a vehicle engages the strips, a loud exterior noise is generated in addition to the alerting in-cabin noise. The extraneous exterior noise can travel at least several hundred feet at a volume which is considered a nuisance by nearby residents. In the recent years, a new rumble strip design in the form of a sine wave has been reported to produce low exterior noise, while still providing adequate warnings for drivers. This study evaluated three sinusoidal rumble strips of different wavelengths-12, 18, and 24 inch. The rumble strips were quantitatively compared by measuring the noise inside and outside of the vehicle as well as the vibration of the front seat frame. Results showed that the sound responses varied across the vehicles. From the exterior, all three sinusoidal rumble strips were quieter than the traditional rumble strips, with a reduction in sound power by 5 to 11 dBA. Interior cabin sound level was similar to standard rumble strips, with some cases increasing between 2 and 9 dBA. The retro reflectivity tests also exceed the minimum threshold set by INDOT specifications.Sinusoidal rumbles strips are a promising technology that is well suited for lane departure warning in residential areas. The results from this study suggest that the 12 in wavelength has a desirable decrease in exterior noise while still maintaining adequate lane departure warning to the driver.

"Rumble strips are proven safety countermeasures for roadway departure crashes. They produce vibration and noise to alert drivers that they are drifting from the travel lane. Neighboring residents--contiguous to roadways with rumble strips--often complain about the noise generated by these appurtenances. This has prompted a need to simultaneously study noise mitigation and rumble strip design and application. NCHRP Research Report 1107: Effective Low-Noise Rumble Strips, from TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program, proposes a rumble strip design that would minimize exterior noise on the outside of the vehicle yet generate sufficient auditory and vibratory response on the inside of the vehicle to alert the operator of a roadway lane departure." --Publisher's website

This Sinusoidal Rumble Strip Design Optimization Study presents results of sound level monitoring of four types of centerline rumble strips installed along Trunk Highway (TH) 18 in Mille Lacs and Aitken counties in Minnesota. This study is in response to objections raised by some landowners about the unwanted noise caused by vehicles traveling over rumble strips when they drift over the edge or centerline of the roadway. By changing and modifying the design, the ultimate goal is to provide the maximum safety by capturing the driver’s attention through in-vehicle generated sound levels while minimizing the associated external noise generated by the rumble strips. Tests on TH 18 were performed with three different vehicles – passenger car, pickup truck and a class 35 tandem dump truck. A single speed of 60 mph was used, as this was shown to provide the most meaningful data in the previous study. For each of the designs, an initial test was performed with vehicles traveling on normal pavement, followed by three passes on the rumble strip. Rumble strip designs 1 and 4 created lower exterior sound level increases but created interior levels similar to designs 2 and 3. The external results correspond to the depth of the rumble strip design, with designs 1 and 4 having a maximum depth of 1/8 inch less than designs 2 and 3. The interior sound level increases are similar for all four designs but vary by vehicle type. All of the designs created increases greater than 10 dBA for the passenger car, which is a desirable level for gaining attention of the driver. For the pickup truck, the interior sound level increases ranged from 4.5 to 6.8 dBA, while the increases for the dump truck ranged from 0.8 to 2.7 dBA.

TCRP report 155 provides guidelines and descriptions for the design of various common types of light rail transit (LRT) track. The track structure types include ballasted track, direct fixation ("ballastless") track, and embedded track. The report considers the characteristics and interfaces of vehicle wheels and rail, tracks and wheel gauges, rail sections, alignments, speeds, and track moduli. The report includes chapters on vehicles, alignment, track structures, track components, special track work, aerial structures/bridges, corrosion control, noise and vibration, signals, traction power, and the integration of LRT track into urban streets.
