"The Ruhroel hydrogenation plant is situated on the easterly out-skirts of Bottrop, near the village of Welheim and covers and area of 188.7 acres. It lies practically in the center of the Ruhr, five miles north of Essen ... In May of 1944, an average month, the plant produced 4,700 tons of aviation gasoline, 6,300 tons of marine fuel, 1,000 tons of 'Treibgas' and 1,700 tons of coal extract. The aviation gasoline was of the highest quality (exclusive of alkalytes and iso-octane) made in Germany. Fuel oil was a high grade, low sulphur stock, containing relatively no sediments. Among the by-products of plant operation were inhibitors, oxygen, phenols, sulphuric acid and ethylene. The raw materials used were phenols, sulphuric used were mostly heavy coal tar pitches. Hydrogen was made from coke and steam via water gas sets, and from coke oven gas by low temperature gas separation. The plant was the designated target in five raids by the RAF and four raids by the US Strategic Air Forces"--Page 1.
