We can have roses almost anywhere. It is even possible to have them in poor, sandy soil, but it is not possible to have the best double varieties without the best soil and the best care. As a whole, the rose family asks for a deep, rich and heavy soil; but the Burnet, or Scotch, roses will thrive in sand; so will the Memorial, or Wichuraiana--and there are a score of excellent varieties derived from this which make rampant growth with almost no soil at all, and seem not to ask much care.
