C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His thrillers are a continuation of his war stories, with upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it.

Maitland & Standish-Two volumes of 'Sapper's' most memorable action heroes Herman Cyril McNeile (better known to his readers as 'Sapper') was a former soldier and prolific author of adventure and detective fiction. His Bulldog Drummond stories have become classics and have been abidingly popular with enthusiasts of the genre from the time they were first published to the present day. Leonaur has already gathered together the Drummond stories and has now turned its attention to the exploits of two more of Sapper's great characters-monocled, two-fisted adventurer, Jim Maitland and the suave detective, Ronald Standish, whose exploits have been collected in two substantial and complementary volumes. These stories belong to a golden age after the First World War when 'men of the world' threw themselves into danger for the sheer thrill of the 'game'. Through Jim Maitland we experience high adventure across the globe, from burning deserts to steaming jungles (sometimes peopled by fantastical man-beasts). Aficionados of the Bulldog Drummond stories will delight in the adventures of the elegant Ronald Standish in these exciting stories of thrills and desperate gambits. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

'Ask For Ronald Standish' is a collection of short stories featuring McNeile's debonair and refined detective, Roland Standish. Cyril McNeile was born on 28th September 1888, in Bodmin, Cornwall. McNeile's writing career began in 1915 when the Daily Mail serialised Reminiscences of Sergeant Michael Cassidy. He wrote under the pseudonym "Sapper" due to British Army personnel being barred from publishing under their real names. McNeile's most famous creation was that of Bull-Dog Drummond in 1920. Drummond was an ex-army captain with a thirst for adventure and defeating bad guys.
