Excerpt from Romances of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2: An Episode in the History of the Novel This essay was submitted in partial fulfil ment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Columbia University. The subject falls naturally into two parts, the first dealing with the origin, rise, and decay in Spain of the romance of roguery, commonly called the picaresque novel; the second deal ing with Spanish influence and native de velopment beyond the Peninsula, in France, Germany, Holland, and England. The second part will be presented in a future publication, the research for which is already accomplished; but the first part, now issued, besides treating Spanish picaresque fiction in full, together with the social and literary causes leading to its ascendency, is concerned outside of Spain with translations of these novels and their direct incorporation in other literatures. Excerpt from The Literature of Roguery, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been my purpose to make this study authoritative, not only in the main, but in matters of detail. To this end the conclusions of the standard monographs dealing with its va rions phases have been embodied in the text, and such works of reference, as well as the best editions of originals, are noted in bibliographies appended to each chapter. In every case, however, I have worked at first hand with the sources them selves and can confess to little immediate debt to books about books. To friends my obligation is greater. Professor G. R. Car penter of Columbia University first called my attention to this subject ten years ago. Professor G. E. Woodberry directed my earlier investigations in the field and personally supervised the issue of my Romances of Roguery, dealing with the picar esque novel in Spain. To Sr. Menendez y Pelayo and the late Professor Jan ten Brink, as to Professor J. E. Spingarn of Columbia University, I am indebted for valuable suggestions; while to Professor W. A. Neilson of Harvard University I owe the thanks of one who has benefited by the kind offices of an admirable editor and a generous friend. F. W. C. More than fifty specialists have contributed to this new edition of volume 1 of The Cambridge Bibliography of English Literature. The design of the original work has established itself so firmly as a workable solution to the immense problems of analysis, articulation and coordination that it has been retained in all its essentials for the new edition. The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

The present English version, authorized by the publishers and heirs of M. Merimee, is based on the third French Edition. New material of two sorts has been added, however. First, the translator has been allowed to utlize an annotated, interleaved copy of the Precis, 1922, in which the author, and after his death his son Henri, himself a distinguished Hispanist, had set down material for the next revision. This accounts for many inserted names and phrases, and some paragraphs. Second, the translator has rewritten and added with some freedom.
