While in medical school (which I did not have the privilege of completing), once a week we had a small group discussion class called Focus On Problems. Each group had a leader, a member of the medical school staff or someone closely associated with the school, usually an MD or Ph.D. Our group leader was Dean of the Medical School, H. David Wilson, MD. One class period focused on working with patients of different ethnic backgrounds. Dr. Wilson asked me what were some of the traditions of my tribe in regard to medicine that would be helpful for a doctor to know. My reply was that I had been raised like a white, that I had grown up learning about various herbal and natural remedies, but that I knew nothing about the specific medical traditions, ceremonial or secular, of my people.I had always longed to know of the traditions of my people before that, but circumstances of my family history had not allowed it. That question in the Focus On Problems class caused that longing to intensify into a sharp pang of longing that would not be satisfied until many years later. While in the first two years of medical school as a nontraditional student, I was in an environment that encouraged the development of the knowledge of Native American traditions. We had Native American speakers that came and elaborated on Native American traditions. One area that was lacking was tribal histories, but what academics label prehistory. I commented to her that when white man came, they did all they could to destroy our social and religious fabric, so the old traditions were not passed down to most of the remaining members of the tribes. Now we know nothing of our old history. There is nothing left. The white side of my family history is easy to know, but not my Cherokee and Choctaw side. She replied by saying that, yes, many of our peoples have lost their old traditions, and it is sad.

The province's premier journalist tells the story he was born to write. No journalist has travelled the back roads, hidden vales and fog-soaked coves of Nova Scotia as widely as John DeMont. No writer has spent as much time considering its peculiar warp and weft of humanity, geography and history. The Long Way Home is the summation of DeMont's years of travel, research and thought. It tells the story of what is, from the European view of things, the oldest part of Canada. Before Confederation it was also the richest, but now Nova Scotia is among the poorest. Its defining myths and stories are mostly about loss and sheer determination. Equal parts narrative, memoir and meditation, The Long Way Home chronicles with enthralling clarity a complex and multi-dimensional story: the overwhelming of the first peoples and the arrival of a mélange of pioneers who carved out pockets of the wilderness; the random acts and unexplained mysteries; the shameful achievements and noble failures; the rapture and misery; the twists of destiny and the cold-heartedness of fate. This is the biography of a place that has been hardened by history. A place full of reminders of how great a province it has been and how great—with the right circumstances and a little luck—it could be again.

When magazine journalist, Jonathan Tame arrives on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico; after an alleged, devastating hurricane has struck the Island; it doesnt take long for the nearly burned-out writer to re-awaken his investigative training. There is a ton of money being poured into emergency coffers, but only a small portion has been allocated for repairs. Following the money trail, he discovers that a powerful entity is attempting to control the U.S. government, and other world leaders. The cash flow seems to be related to some secret project that is intended to disarm all of them. And further; that ancient archaeological artifacts, discovered years before, and said to have immeasurable power, may be the core reason behind the whole thing. In his pursuit of the truth, he finds that he is not alone; other investigators are moving in the same direction -- it's when their paths intersect that all of hell is stirred up.

Warrior Rising: Seven Journeys Book 1 By: Ann Shaw The time of the Elfain Warriors is over. Their tales of bravery and their ability to wield the elements are all that remain of the heroes of old. However, there are the Foretellings that tell of the Warrior’s return to defeat a black shadow that threatens to destroy the Kingdom of Albavar. Gildon is a scholar and a wanderer. He believes that the warriors will return, and he thinks that he may have found one of them in Cole, an orphan and an apprentice to a carpenter. Cole may seem normal, but Gildon soon discovers that Cole can wield, and not only that, but he can see the future or past of anyone he touches. Because of his gift, he sees an old enemy of Albavar rise again. Shelrin, the once dark Warlord who ruled over Albavar with cruelty and malice, has broken free of Grimhold prison and is determined to take back the Kingship’s throne. Bearing the weapons of ancient power, Shelrin seems unstoppable. But there is hope. The Elfain Warrior and Seer, Ayden, saw the war that would rise long after he was gone. He ordered seven weapons be hidden throughout the land, so when the time came, the returning warriors would find them and use them to destroy the great darkness that threatens Albavar. Because of his gift, Cole knows where these weapons are. So, with the help of seven companions, Cole sets out to travel across Albavar to find the weapons and fight the darkness that Shelrin is causing. As the first book in the Seven Journeys series, Warrior Rising will thrill readers and show that even those who have gone before us still hold a great strength which is passed to the current generation.
