Integrated ring resonators have attracted a considerable interest in optical communications because of their small size and wide range of applicability. Here we consider several aspects of these devices, beginning with a tunable hybrid ring resonators consisting of a silicon over insulator (SOI) ring covered with a polymer layer in a variable electric field. Varying the field changes the polymer refractive index and consequently the resonance condition of the cavity. This device offers a large degree of optical confinement together with a high modulation speed. Subsequently, we design and present fabrication results for a Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) multiplexer/demultiplexer formed from a series of ring resonators with two channels separated by 50 GHz each that is predicted to exhibit a free spectral range (FSR) of 100 GHz, signal dispersion less than 30 ps/nm and a signal cross-talk less than -23 dB. Finally, we analyze the application of the coupled ring waveguide circuit to rotation sensors based on the Sagnac phase shift. Here, however our analysis indicates that a single ring, of the same area exhibits a higher degree of sensitivity to rotational motion than a multiple ring circuit.

Micro-ring resonators (MRRs) are employed to generate signals used for optical communication applications, where they can be integrated in a single system. These structures are ideal candidates for very large-scale integrated (VLSI) photonic circuits, since they provide a wide range of optical signal processing functions while being ultra-compact. Soliton pulses have sufficient stability for preservation of their shape and velocity. Technological progress in fields such as tunable narrow band laser systems, multiple transmission, and MRR systems constitute a base for the development of new transmission techniques. Controlling the speed of a light signal has many potential applications in fiber optic communication and quantum computing. The slow light effect has many important applications and is a key technology for all optical networks such as optical signal processing. Generation of slow light in MRRs is based on the nonlinear optical fibers. Slow light can be generated within the micro-ring devices, which will be able to be used with the mobile telephone. Therefore, the message can be kept encrypted via quantum cryptography. Thus perfect security in a mobile telephone network is plausible. This research study involves both numerical experiments and theoretical work based on MRRs for secured communication.

A ring resonator 4 cm in diameter was fabricated and tested for sensing applications. A finesse of four was measured, and agreed with measured coupling efficiency and losses. Techniques have been developed to reduce the loss and from our measurements we predict that a finesse of more than 20 should be easily achievable in an interferometer 4 cm in diameter. This device has a wide variety of applications from temperature and wavelength sensing to inertial rotation sensing. Further refinements which will produce a high finesse resonator are the fabrication of a single mode ring and using specially prepared optical glass substrates. Operation at wavelengths longer than 0.63 micron will also improve the performance. (Author).

The title explain new technique of secured and high capacity optical communication signals generation by using the micro and nano ring resonators. The pulses are known as soliton pulses which are more secured due to having the properties of chaotic and dark soliton signals with ultra short bandwidth. They have high capacity due to the fact that ring resonators are able to generate pulses in the form of solitons in multiples and train form. These pulses generated by ring resonators are suitable in optical communication due to use the compact and integrated rings system, easy to control, flexibility, less loss, application in long distance communication and many other advantages. Using these pulses overcome the problems such as losses during the propagation, long distances, error detection, using many repeaters or amplifiers, undetectable received signals, pulse broadening, overlapping and so on. This book show how to generate soliton pulses using ring resonators in the micro and nano range which can be used in optical communication to improve the transmission technique and quality of received signals in networks such as WiFi and wireless communication.

Coherent optical signal processing systems typically require dynamic, low-loss phase changes of an optical signal. Waveform generation employing phase modulation is an important application area. In particular, laser radar systems have been shown to perform better with non-linear frequency chirps. This work shows how dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators are able to produce such phase changes to a signal in an effective manner and offer new possibilities for the detection of phase-modulated optical signals. When designing and fabricating dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators for any application, system level requirements must be taken into account. For frequency chirped laser radar systems, the primary system level requirements are good long range performance and fine range resolution. These mainly depend on the first sidelobe level and mainlobe width of the autocorrelation of the chirp. Through simulation, the sidelobe level and mainlobe width of the autocorrelation of the non-linear frequency modulated chirp generated by a series of integrated optical ring resonators is shown to be significantly lower than the well-known tangent-FM chirp. Proof-of-concept experimentation is also important to verify simulation assumptions. A proof-of-concept experiment employing thermally tunable Silicon-Nitride integrated optical ring resonators is shown to generate non-linear frequency modulated chirp waveforms with peak instantaneous frequencies of 28 kHz. Besides laser radar waveform generation, three other system level applications of dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators are explored in this work. A series of dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators is shown to produce constant dispersion which can then help extract complex spectral information. Broadband photonic RF phase shifting for beam steering of a phased array antenna is also shown using dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators. Finally all-optical pulse compression for laser radar using dynamically tunable integrated optical ring resonators is shown through simulation and proof-of-concept experimentation.
