Abstract: "In this paper we review the recent multichannel models developed in psycho-physiology, computer vision and image processing. In psycho-physiology, multichannel models have been particularly successful for explaining some low-level processing in the visual cortex. The expansion of a function in several frequency channels provides a representation which is intermediate between a spatial and a Fourier representation. We describe the mathematical properties of such decompositions and introduce the wavelet transform. We review the classical multiresolution pyramidal transforms developed in computer vision and show how they relate to the decomposition of an image in a wavelet orthonormal basis. In the last section we discuss the properties of the zero-crossings of multifrequency channels. Zero-crossings representations are particularly well adapted for pattern recognition in computer vision."

Excerpt from Robotics Research Technical Report: Review of Multifrequency Channel Decompositions, of Images and Wavelet Models In this paper we review the recent multichannel models developed in psycho-physiology, computer vision and image processing. In psychophysiology. multichannel models have been particularly successful for explaining some low-level processing tn the visual cortex. The expansion of a function in several frequency channels provides a representation which is intermediate between a spatial and a Fourier representation We describe the mathematical properties of such decompositions and introduce the wavelet transform. We review the classical multircsolution pyramidal transforms developed in computer vision and show how they relate to the decomposition of an image in a wavelet orthonormal basis. In the last section we discuss the properties of the zcro-crossings of multifrcqocncy channels. Zcro-crossings representations arc particularly well adapted for pattern recognition in computer vision. 1. Introduction Within the last 10 years, multi-frequency channel decompositions have found many applications in image processing. In psycho-physiology of human vision, multichannel models have also been particularly successful for explaining some low-level biological processings. This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 10th International Workshop on Theoretical Foundations of Computer Vision, held at Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, in March 2000. The 20 revised full papers presented have been through two rounds of reviewing, selection, and revision and give a representative assessment of the foundational issues in multiple-image processing. The papers are organized in topical sections on 3D data acquisition and sensor design, multi-image analysis, data fusion in 3D scene description, and applied 3D vision and virtual reality.

The wavelet transform can be seen as a synthesis of ideas that have emerged since the 1960s in mathematics, physics, and electrical engineering. The basic idea is to use a family of ``building blocks'' to represent in an efficient way the object at hand, be it a function, an operator, a signal, or an image. The building blocks themselves come in different ``sizes'' which can describe different features with different resolutions. The papers in this book attempt to give some theoretical and technical shape to this intuitive picture of wavelets and their uses. The papers collected here were prepared for an AMS Short Course on Wavelets and Applications, held at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in San Antonio in January 1993. Here readers will find general background on wavelets as well as more detailed views of specific techniques and applications. With contributions by some of the top experts in the field, this book provides an excellent introduction to this important and growing area of research.

Wavelet analysis is among the newest additions to the arsenals of mathematicians, scientists, and engineers, and offers common solutions to diverse problems. However, students and professionals in some areas of engineering and science, intimidated by the mathematical background necessary to explore this subject, have been unable to use this powerful tool. The first book on the topic for readers with minimal mathematical backgrounds, Wavelet Analysis with Applications to Image Processing provides a thorough introduction to wavelets with applications in image processing. Unlike most other works on this subject, which are often collections of papers or research advances, this book offers students and researchers without an extensive math background a step-by-step introduction to the power of wavelet transforms and applications to image processing. The first four chapters introduce the basic topics of analysis that are vital to understanding the mathematics of wavelet transforms. Subsequent chapters build on the information presented earlier to cover the major themes of wavelet analysis and its applications to image processing. This is an ideal introduction to the subject for students, and a valuable reference guide for professionals working in image processing.

This book covers the basics of processing and spectral analysis of monovariate discrete-time signals. The approach is practical, the aim being to acquaint the reader with the indications for and drawbacks of the various methods and to highlight possible misuses. The book is rich in original ideas, visualized in new and illuminating ways, and is structured so that parts can be skipped without loss of continuity. Many examples are included, based on synthetic data and real measurements from the fields of physics, biology, medicine, macroeconomics etc., and a complete set of MATLAB exercises requiring no previous experience of programming is provided. Prior advanced mathematical skills are not needed in order to understand the contents: a good command of basic mathematical analysis is sufficient. Where more advanced mathematical tools are necessary, they are included in an Appendix and presented in an easy-to-follow way. With this book, digital signal processing leaves the domain of engineering to address the needs of scientists and scholars in traditionally less quantitative disciplines, now facing increasing amounts of data.
