Excerpt from Review of Attorney General Clifford's Report Against the Prohibitive Liquor Law of Massachusetts, and Speech of William B. Spooner, Esq.: Before the Joint Committee of the Massachusetts Legislature, Appointed to Consider So Much of the Governor's Message as Related to the Temperance Question Of the great increase in the criminal business of the Commonwealth which they compel us to contemplate and deplore, a very large proportion has arisen out of the efforts that have been made to enforce the Prohibitory Liquor Laws of 1852 and 1855 in the several counties in the State. Of the unprecedentedly large number of cases which have been carried from the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court of Boston to the Supreme Judicial Court, upon bills of exception, and motions in arrest of judgment, and which have been argued by the Attorney General, nearly two-thirds have grown out of prose entions for alleged violations of these statutes. Of the whole number of offences, making a total of 5151, more than 2000, or nearly a moiety of all the criminal prosecutions of the year. Which have reached the Court of Common Pleas and the Municipal Court, are of the same class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
