This clinically oriented book provides a complete overview of Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) Retinal Detachment, a difficult surgical challenge faced by ophthalmologists. Small gauge vitrectomy offers new possibilities to tackle this difficult pathology however this surgical approach may differ from one retinal surgeon to the next. To reflect the various approaches to treating PVR, the book is divided up in three parts. In the first part the authors describe the complete variety of surgical techniques applied to PVR detachment. In the second section, well-known international surgeons from Europe to Asia describe their personal surgical approach for PVR detachment and demonstrate their surgery in videos. In the third part, a large variety of retinal surgeons show case reports of PVR retinal detachment to give a complete overview of dealing with this complex retinal disorder.

The purpose of this book is to provide an update both on the present management of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and on clinical and experimental research being done to control this disease. The book is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the current management of PVR. The Retina Society Classification of PVR is based in part on a gradation of severity from minimal to massive; therefore, this book attempts to correlate the management of PVR with its severity. The treatment of PVR of varying degrees of severity, from mild to the most severe form, is described by those authors with extensive experience with this spectrum of cases. Much progress has been made in the management of severe PVR as a result of vitreous injections, vitrectomy, periretinal membrane surgery, and retinal surgery. Authors in this book show that in mild and moderately severe PVR excellent results can be obtained with techniques that are less invasive and possibly less likely to stimulate further abnormal cellular proliferation. The new modalities for treatment of PVR are discussed by authors having extensive experience with them. The current status of pharmacological treatment and new concepts of the pathobiology of PVR are discussed. The second part of the book deals with questions frequently encountered in the management of PVR. These questions are answered by a panel of experts including Gary W. Abrams, Steven T. Charles, William H. Havener, Robert Machemer, Charles L. Schepens, and Walter H. Stern.

Dr. Kreissig has spent a lifetime refining and teaching the minimalized approach to repairing retinal detachments. In this book, you will get the benefit of her experience -- in an easily accessible, pocket-sized handbook that fits into your lab coat and is also ideal for bedside or office consultation. The book is the first hands-on guide to the "art of buckling", i.e., applying a minimum of buckling without vitrectomy for retinal reattachment. The text is excellently illustrated and written in a dialogue style. From completing the preoperative exam to making the diagnosis and choosing the surgical technique, this book provides the facts and guidelines to successfully perform minimal extraocular surgery. It includes instructions on finding the retinal break in phakic, aphakic and pseudophakic detachments the four rules to find the primary break are presented on the back cover for immediate access. Ophthalmologists, fellows in retinal and vitreous surgery, students and residents will find this information-packed manual essential for diagnosing and repairing retinal detachments.

This information-packed volume is the ultimate guide for today's vitreo-retinal surgeon. It is written by leading experts in the field. The book begins with an extensive review, analyzing the evolution of present-day detachment surgery over the past 70 years. Here, a changing pattern of treatment modalities comes into view, with four primary procedures in use at the beginning of the twenty-first century. Experts in the field of retinal and vitreous surgery then describe the following surgical techniques: cerclage with drainage, pneumatic retinopexy, primary vitrectomy, and minimal segmental buckling without drainage. The advantages and disadvantages of each technique are assessed in relation to case selection, single operation attachment, final attachment, complications, visual function, and cost effectiveness. The techniques are then compared with each other. The volume continues with a description of the use of modern adjuvant pharmacotherapy (intravitreal triamcinolone acetonide, anti-metabolites, fluorouracil, daunorubicin, heparin, etc.) to improve the surgical and functional outcome of these techniques. Finally, in the chapter entitled "Outlook for the Future," new imaging techniques (ballistic light imaging, refined ultrasonography, wide angle pseudo color SLO, etc.) and anti-proliferative drugs are discussed. Ophthalmologists, fellows in retinal and vitreous surgery, and students and residents will find this book essential for diagnosing and repairing a primary retinal detachment: The book contains instructive, color computer drawings and tables.

Vitreoretinal surgery on video contains a selection of operations carried out during the past 8-10 years. The technical aspects of vitreoretinal surgery have undergone significant modifications during the last 10 years. The most important innovations have been the development of new instruments, the introduction of PFC liquid and the use of the wide angle system, all of which are demonstrated by the cases on the video. The eight videotapes are each of approximately 60 minutes duration and although there is no commentary, the accompanying text contains a short case history, and an explanation of the operative techniques used, with emphasis on important points during the operation, and a description of the instruments and their use. The series is aimed at ophthalmologists interested in vitreoretinal surgery. The video shows difficult and complicated cases in all indication groups, which the ophthalmologist encounters in his daily work. The concept of and techniques used in treatment of difficult vitreoretinal cases are described in Zivojonic's previously published book Silicone Oil in Vitreoretinal Surgery (Dordrecht), 1987, ISBN 0-89838-879-1). The video series is available as a complete set and as single tapes in PAL and NTSC formats. The author will donate the royalties to the Foundation for Ophthalmic Aid in favor of the eye clinics of the former Yugoslavia."

Retinal Detachment: Principles and Practice provides a historical review of current information on the diagnosis and treatment of retinal detachment. It is intended as both an introduction for graduate students in ophthalmology and a concise review or reference for practicing ophthalmologists. The volume defines the types of retinal detachments, their classifications and causes, and covers preoperative examination, preoperative management, prophylactic procedures, surgery, complications of surgery, and results of reattachment surgery. It also includes a historical introduction, suggested readings at the end of each chapter, and the classic article 'The Technique of Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscopy,' by Morten L. Rosenthal.

From the foreword: "Microsurgery of Retinal Detachment is an important contribution to the practice of vitreoretinal surgery. In this comprehensive volume, Dr. Bonnet shares her extensive experience in the management of conditions ranging from retinal tears and primary retinal detachment to giant retinal breaks and vitreoretinal surgery. The field of microsurgery has continued to evolve over the last twenty years, both for the anterior segment surgeon and, since 1970, for the vitreoretinal surgeon. Although there have been extensive descriptions of vitrectomy techniques, little has been written about microsurgical techniques for scleral buckling operations. This subject is well covered in the present edition, which consequently will be a valuable resource to the majority of retinal surgeons who do not as a rule employ microsurgery in the repair of retinal detachments."
