Dynamic fracture processes in structural materials are often described in terms of the relationship between a measure of the crack driving force and the crack-tip speed. In this paper, ongoing research directed toward establishing a basis for such a relationship in terms of crack-tip plastic fields is described. In particular, the role of material inertia on a small scale as it influences the perceived fracture resistance of a rate-independent material is discussed. Also, the influence of material strain rate sensitivity on the development of crack-tip plastic deformations, and the implications for cleavage propagation and arrest in a material that can undergo a fracture mechanism transition is considered. The discussion is concluded with mention of a few outstanding problems in the study of dynamic fracture, including some recent experimental evidence that the traditional crack-tip characterization viewpoint of fracture mechanics may be inadequate under very high rate loading conditions.

The shadow spots which are obtained in using the optical method of caustics to experimentally determine dynamic stress intensity factors are usually interpreted on the basis of a static elastic crack model. In this paper, an attempt is made to include both crack tip plasticity and inertial effects in the analysis underlying the use of the method in reflection. For dynamic crack propagation in the two-dimensional tensile mode which is accompanied by a Dugdale-Barenblatt line plastic zone, the predicted caustic curves and corresponding initial curves are studied within the framework of plane stress and small scale yielding conditions. These curves are found to have geometrical features which are quite different from those for purely elastic crack growth. Estimates are made of the range of system parameters for which plasticity and inertia effects should be included in data analysis when using the method of caustics. For example, it is found that the error introduced through the neglect of plasticity effects in the analysis of data will be small as long as the distance from the crack tip to the initial curve ahead of the tip is more than about twice the plastic zone size. Also, it is found that the error introduced through the neglect of inertial effects will be small as long as the crack speed is less than about 20% of the longitudinal wave speed. (Author).

The objective of this work is to develop a procedure by which crack tip plasticity can be taken directly into account in rapid crack propagation. To set the stage, a background description of linear elastic dynamic fracture mechanics is first given. Existing solutions for dynamic crack propagation and for quasistatic crack growth accompanied by crack tip plasticity are reviewed. It is found that existing dynamic plastic fracture solutions are essentially confined to strip yield (Dugdale model) plastic zones that are collinear with the crack. The ultimate goal of the research reported in this paper is to provide the basis of a computational procedure for plastic dynamic crack propagation in structures of engineering interest. The prerequisite for such a development is knowledge of the nature of the crack tip singularity, which can be obtained via an asymptotic analysis in which attention is focused on the very near crack tip region. Here we have considered the specific case of crack propagation in antiplane strain (Mode III). The results suggest some interesting general conclusions, and the analysis has pointed the way to the solution of the Mode I problem.

A correlation is assumed to exist between the true crack tip stress intensity factor range existing at the crack tip, and the instantaneous crack growth increment. In order to find the true crack tip stress intensity range crack closure induced by local plasticity is modelled using a simplified model in which the yielding is confined to a line, and boundary elements, together with a quadratic programming procedure, are used to determine both the extent of plasticity and crack closure effects. A means of determining crack growth rate is then developed, which may use data obtained experimentally at a different R-ratio from that in the prototype. Confirmation of the general correctness of the hypothesis is obtained by conducting 4-point bend fatigue tests with varying degrees of load reversal, and moiré interferometric measurements of the crack tip displacement field. This enables correlations to be made between the measured values of the crack tip closure conditions and the values predicted by the model. Good agreement is found. The approach may be directly extended to cases where there are occasional under or overloads, or a complex loading regime is applied.

When asked to start teaching a course on engineering fracture mechanics, I realized that a concise textbook, giving a general oversight of the field, did not exist. The explanation is undoubtedly that the subject is still in a stage of early development, and that the methodologies have still a very limited applicability. It is not possible to give rules for general application of fracture mechanics concepts. Yet our comprehension of cracking and fracture beha viour of materials and structures is steadily increasing. Further developments may be expected in the not too distant future, enabling useful prediction of fracture safety and fracture characteristics on the basis of advanced fracture mechanics procedures. The user of such advanced procedures m\lst have a general understanding of the elementary concepts, which are provided by this volume. Emphasis was placed on the practical application of fracture mechanics, but it was aimed to treat the subject in a way that may interest both metallurgists and engineers. For the latter, some general knowledge of fracture mechanisms and fracture criteria is indispensable for an apprecia tion of the limita tions of fracture mechanics.
