The livestock sector of China today is barely recognizable to that of two decades ago. The enormous change and growth of the industry will continue to have profound effects both within China and internationally. Understanding China's livestock revolution requires an in-depth study of the forces at work in the market, policy, institutional and agribusiness environment in rural China. This is achieved through an investigation of the emerging and especially intriguing sheep meat industry. The authors also draw upon their extensive field work based research on other livestock industries in China over the last two decades to enrich the analysis and identify broader trends throughout the livestock sector as a whole. This book is a significant addition to the literature on China's agricultural economy. It is an especially valuable resource for researchers, policy makers and industry participants concerned with China's ruminant livestock and meat sector.

Contents: Animal Husbandry is intended primarily as a text for the basic course in Animal Industries and Farm Animals, as the case may be. It should prove useful as a reference bok for those involved in livestock production. This book is not an encyclopaedia. Rather, it is a concise and up-to-date collection of those facts and judgements that can give a beginning student a wellrounded and clear picture of the scope, importance, and operation of our great livestock, packing, and diary industries. Since many students major in other fields and make this their principal contact with a very important field of knowledge, an effort has been made to confine the material to the essential facts and to maintain student interest by the liberal use of pictures, tables and charts.

In the past two decades, China has merged as the largest animal product producer in the world. In view of its huge population and the growing economy, changes in China's domestic demand for animal products will have further influence on the development of China's livestock industry and will also inevitably impact on the world animal product market and feedgrains market. Further, the recent WTO accession is also expected to generate significant impacts on the development of China's livestock sector. While the removal of non-tariff barriers and the reduction of tariff rates applied to animal products will place domestic producers under intensified pressure to competing with imports, the accession may lead to increased export opportunities as well. Thus, it is relevant and important to fully understand how China's livestock industry has evolved in the past but more importantly how this industry will develop into the future. This paper presents an overview on the development of China's livestock industry. It highlights the performance of China's livestock industry in the past two decades and identifies key factors that have contributed to the development of this industry. It also addresses major issues that are likely to affect future development of China's livestock industry.

The farming of animals for meat and milk confronts a stark dilemma. While world demand from a growing and more affluent human population is increasing rapidly, there are strong counter-arguments that we should eat less meat and pay more attention to environmental protection, animal welfare and human health and well-being. The aim of this book is to identify and explain the causes and contributors to current problems in animal husbandry, especially those related to 'factory farming', and advance arguments that may contribute to its successful re-orientation. Husbandry is considered in its broadest sense, namely the productive and sustainable use of the land for the good of all (plants, humans and other animals). The first part of the book outlines principles and arguments necessary to engage with current problems: depletion of natural resources and destruction of environment, animal welfare, food and health, fair trade and sharing resources. These arguments are illustrated by examples and sufficient evidence to justify the argument without obscuring the message. The second part presents a series of constructive proposals for change and development in animal husbandry, both in the developed world and subsistence agriculture. These include more integrated crop and livestock farming systems, the ethics of animal welfare and environmental management, and the evolution of a new social contract whereby the rights of the people to a fair share of good, safe food and a green and pleasant land are matched by a shared responsibility to preserve these things.
