Excerpt from Report on India and Persia: Of the Deputation Sent by the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A. To Visit These Fields in 1921-22 The date and place of writing of the different chapters of the report are frequently indicated in order to explain occa sional references Which might otherwise be less clear. The letters about the separate stations in China, India and Persia were sent home from the field for the information of the Board and the home constituency. They are included in the report in order to furnish to those who may be unfamiliar With the conditions in the different Missions a sympathetic even though inadequate picture of the living work which is going steadily forward in the midst of all the perplexing questions which are here discussed. I am responsible for all the Report, except the chapter on Property and Finance which was written by Mr. Carter, Whose association in this visit to the Missions was a blessing and joy to all. We have both gone over the whole Report together, however, and are of one mind in its representations as we were in all our conferences and communications with the Mis sions and the Churches. In the nineteenth century, Mary Lyon at Mount Holyoke College developed a progressive ideal of useful womanhood: serious, educated, devoted to service, skilled in domestic arts, and ready for leadership. Her disciple Fidelia Fiske took up the unlikely challenge of applying the Mount Holyoke approach to the education of young women and girls in a remote corner of northwestern Persia. In 1906, Nan Graybill joins the Presbyterian Mission in Persia as principal of the Fiske Seminary for Girls near Urmia. It's her job to pursue the task of training her students in these feminine virtues, now modified and updated for the twentieth century. She considers herself a "modern missionary," aiming for social gospel objectives. But in 1914, the outbreak of war between Ottoman Turkey and Tsarist Russia threatens to trample the Urmia province into dust. The Syriac-speaking Christian community there--Orthodox, Catholic, and Protestant--becomes one of the most tragic casualties of the Great War. Nan Graybill and her Assyrian colleagues must lead the school community through this crisis with their own creativity, dedication, tenacity, competence, and courage. Together, they find new ways to endure and to prevail.

This investigation into the little-known genre of mission-oriented films uncovers how Protestant missionaries overseas sought to bring back motion picture footage from remote parts of the world. In the broader religious community, mission films aimed to educate congregants back home about efforts to evangelize communities around the world. This book, however, demonstrates the larger impact of mission films on American visual culture. The evolution and development of the genre is highlighted from an early emphasis on "foreign views" in the 1910s, to interwar films providing a more detailed look at how mission stations functioned in far-flung lands, to Cold War productions which at times functioned as veritable propaganda tools parroting anti-communist discourse emanating from the CIA.

The Christian community in India emerged from an Indian rather than a foreign or an imperial context. Its internal dynamics were shaped far more by Indian social realities than by missionary designs. This book presents a comprehensive social history of Christianity in north-west India, comprising Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, the Union Territories of Delhi and Chandigarh, and the Pakistani Punjab and North-West Frontier Province. The book discusses significant events in the history of the north-west up to 1947, after which it focuses only on India. These events left a lasting impact on Christianity and shaped its future course, culminating in the transfer of churches’ power from foreign missionaries to Indians and proliferation of churches, and the ongoing struggles of the Christian community. The author pays special attention to the Christian community’s caste composition—how caste status and social mobility affected intra- and inter-community relations—religious diversity, uneven demographic distribution, and development, as well as Christianity as a religious movement in the region.
