Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries: For the Year 1877 The area of water surface in our State is composed, principally, almost exclusively, of streams possessing but few deep fresh water lakes. The kind of fish, which have a peculiar interest for the city of Erie, and have the greatest commercial value, is the white fish, (coregonus Albus, ) the most valuable fresh water variety ranging geographically through all the great lakes of the North, and more recently introduced, with good pros peets of success, into some of the inland lakes of a few of the Northern States, where the depth of water and temperature are peculiarly suitable to their increase in size as well as in numbers. Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the Year 1896 The Commissioners believe further that there are many persons who violate the fish laws under the mistaken idea that it is rare that any one is arrested and convicted for the offense. Because they seldom hear of such cases. It is hoped that the publication of the wardens' reports will Open their eyes to the serious error they make in thus reasoning. Excerpt from Report of the Commissioner, Vol. 23: For the Year Ending June 30, 1897 The work of the Division of fish-culture, prosecuted on the same general lines as in past years, is shown by the following abstracts of reports of the superintendents of the various stations. The same sta tions were operated as in 1896, with the addition of those at Manches ter, Iowa, and San Marcos, Tex., which were completed in December. The output of salmon fry was largely augmented by the establishment of auxiliary stations at Battle Creek Cal., on Salmon River, Oregon, and the Little White Salmon, Washington, which were operated in conjunction with Baird and Clackamas stations. During the year all the stations in New England and on the Great Lakes, as well as those at Wytheville and Quincy, were inspected by the Commissioner and the assistant in charge of the Division of fish-culture. The shad work on the Atlantic Coast was also largely increased, and steps were taken to investigate the rivers along the South Atlantic coast with the view to the establishment of auxiliary stations. On the New England coast, in addition to the operations conducted at Woods Hole and Gloucester, the Grampus and Fish Hawk were utilized during May and June in collecting lobster eggs off the coast of Maine. The crew of the Grampus also rendered material assistance in the cod work, collecting eggs for Gloucester Station from fishing vessels at Kittery. From the experience gained the past season it is believed that a cod-collecting station can be advantageously established at Plymouth, Mass, and if successful it will obviate the necessity of penning brood fish at Woods Hole, materially reducing the expense of that station. Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the Year 1887 and 1888 In the completion of this work the commission has found itself impeded by the laxity of prevailing laws, the confusion of conflicting enactments and hindrances in the way of prompt prosecution. The code of fishing laws in some instances seems better designed for the escape of the offender than for the benefit of the prosecutor. Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the Year 1873 After we had concluded the purchase of the right to use the boxes, Mr. Green 'came' on to Pennsylvania, with one of his assistants, Edward H. Rhame. We at once established our point of Operations at Newport, in Perry county, at the fishery of Messrs. Miller Kough. Owing to the remarkable low-temperature of the water it was some days after our loca tion at N ewport'before Mr. Rhame succeeded in taking any females ready for Spawning. Then the temperature of the water underwent a sudden change. At the time of the establishment of Newport as a base of opera tions the temperature of the water was about 62° within a Short time af terwards it rose as high as 75° and at one time reached 82° Farenheit. This sudden change very visibly affected the fish, quite a large number be ing taken with the spawn dead within them. This prevented our opera tions from being as successful as they otherwise would have been. Mr. Rhame succeeded, however, in turning into the Susquehanna, at Newport, young shad. Mr. Welcher, another of Mr. Green's assistants, who was in the employ of Prof. Spencer F. Baird, the United States Com missioner of Fisheries, was sent by Prof. Baird to the Susquehanna to as sist in the hatching of shad, the State of Pennsylvania paying all the ex penses of hatching other than that of his own personal compensation. Ow ing to the suddenness with which the warm season set in, he was only able to hatch and turn into the Susquehanna, at Columbia and Marietta, about young shad. The total number of Shad hatched by the artificial method duringthe past year in the Susquehanna was consequently in ex cess of The yield of the fisheries in the Susquehanna, above the Columbia dam, was largely in excess of and much more profitable to those operating them than it has been for many years. The entire catch of. All these fisheries must have exceeded fifty thousand. This was due to the abrasions in the Columbia dam, which were several hundred feet in length and which were created by the immense quantities of ice which were swept down the river by the winter and spring floods, and which formed in an immense ice gorge immediately upon the crest of the dam.
