Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries, for the Year 1895 Large numbers of applications for wall-eyed pike were received and filled during the year, but by far the greater number of the fry were deposited in the waters of Lake Erie. The Commissioners are highly gratified by the action of the last Legislature in doing away with the close season for German carp. Thus permitting their capture at any time during the year. The Com missioners feel that a great mistake was made in the introduction of this fish, which however came well recommended, and at a time when fish culture was in an experimental stage. Experience has now shown the German carp to be a highly objectionable fish, and one creating great damage to other and better species. It has been proven to be a voracious spawn eater, far more so, in fact, even than the eel and sucker. It even devours large quantities of young fry, and unless something can be done to get them from our waters, there is danger that much damage will result. The Commissioners have decided to fill no future applications for German carp, and urge farmers and fish culturists generally to cease their propagation. The ponds formerly devoted to the culture of German carp in the hatching ponds will be used for the increase of other and American fishes. Excerpt from Report of the State Commissioners of Fisheries: For the Year 1898 We have viewed with much concern the rapid absorption of well known fishing waters by private associations and their closing to the public. Twenty-five years ago, for instance, nearly every trout stream in Pike county was free to anyone. To-day public waters are scarce. Almost all the best known streams are now owned or leased by parties who do not allow outsiders to fish without a special permit; Much the same conditions prevail in other counties and every year other streams are taken out of the free list and added to the closed waters. Naturally this state of affairs is very unsatisfactory to the city angler who is not fortunate enough to belong to one of these clubs or organizations owning or controlling a stream, and is equally or more unsatisfactory to the resident in the neighborhood of closed waters. It goes without saying that we are helpless in the matter and before the last sessions Legislature we showed our disapproval of the closed stream system by advocating the passage of a section of an act making it punishable for any person to apply for or to be concerned in applying for any trout to be planted in such waters, from the State's supply.
