Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1897 of Harvard College, 1900-1905 The only illustration in this report, the frontispiece, will be at once recognized by most of the Class as a reproduction, reduced, of the photograph taken by Tupper in the Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, June 28, 1904. Trusting that the report will prove as full of interest to all in the reading as I have found it in the making. Excerpt from Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College, June, 1888, to June, 1893 From recent investigation it appears that our classmate edward lewis stevens, who was killed at the battle of Boykin's Mills, April 18, 1865, was probably the last Union officer killed in the late war; and in this connection it is interesting to recall the fact that our classmate, horace sargent dunn, who died May 22, 1862, was the first Harvard undergraduate who died in the war. Certainly, then, the Class of 1863 can claim to have shown its loyalty to the country from first to last. There are few friendships in life so valuable and so endur ing as those formed in college days. They have a peculiar charm, which is fully appreciated by those only who have enjoyed them. They should be cherished, and are worth preserving. I know of no better way of accomplishing this than for us all to see and hear more of one another. If this record, then, shall answer the questions which one classmate would naturally ask of another at this time, and shall serve to rekindle our interest in one another, and shall strengthen the friendships begun so long ago, it will have accomplished its purpose. It will thus help us to renew our youth, and make a happy and joyous occasion on this thirtieth anniversary. Excerpt from Secretary's First Report: Harvard University, Class of 1897 In conclusion, let me express my personal thanks to all those who have met the frequent appeals of the Secretary with promptness and consideration. It is obvious that with out generous co-operation no adequate class records are possible. I urge upon all the necessity of ready response to the Secretary's future requests, to the end that our records may be complete and our class organization strengthened and preserved. Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College Class of 1905 To the Members of the Class of 1905: The Second Class Report has been made possible by the keen support of a large majority of our class who have taken a loyal interest in trying to make it a success. I wish to apologize for any mistakes that may occur and trust they will be called to my attention. I regret to report that there is a large number of "lost men" and those not heard from. This state of affairs is most unsatisfactory and I believe could be rectified to a large extent if every man in the class felt it a duty to reply promptly and fully to my communications. Be sure to look over the list of "those not heard from" who at the same time appear to be "lost men." If you recognize some one concerning whom you can give information please notify me at once. The most important event since graduation was our triennial celebration. During that glorious week we enjoyed ourselves immensely and, incidentally, showed our prowess in athletics by victories on field and river. I feel that the thanks of the Class are due to Sidney Curtis, '05, who has worked most conscientiously in the preparation of this report and I take pleasure in acknowledging his service. Excerpt from The Eighth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1873, Harvard College: Commencement, 1905 The first points for settlement seemed to be the form which the proposed gift should assume, and the amount of money the members of the Class would subscribe for the purpose. As only a few were present at the meeting of 1897, and as it was felt that an expression of Opinion from the whole Class should be obtained, a circular was issued Jan. 24, 1898, asking for the views of the Class on the subject and for subscriptions to carry out the project. As indicated by the answers to this circular, the preference of the majority was for a gate, and was pledged for its erection. Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report: Harvard College Class of 1907 The scope of this report is small. Its purpose is simply to record the changes of occupation and address, the' mar riages and births, and the deaths which have occurred in the Class since graduation, three years ago. In a work of this kind, a few inaccuracies are inevitable, for which I ask your indulgence, with the assurance that I have spared no pains to minimize them. I am very grateful for the splendid co operation shown by the members of the Class in responding to requests for information. The fact that out of a Class as large as ours, only twelve men have not been heard from, is a record of which 1907 may well be proud. I have ventured, after much hesitation, to dedicate the report to Jack Morse. I am fully sensible of the unworthi ness of the ofiering, but perhaps this may serve until some more appropriate memorial can be provided, as a slight tribute on the part of the Class to the memory of a man whom we all loved and respected. Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1897: Second Report, June, 1903 Now that the volume of our achievements is ready to be bound between its final covers, I wish to say a few words in connection with its creation, and in explanation of its contents. It has taken from August of 1902 to the present time to garner the material for this report, but the showing, on the whole, is a good one, 600 men out of a total of 666 having replied in some form to the official appeals. The slow growth of the report has made it impossible to have every statement up to date, and some addresses may not be all that fancy paints them; but the primary effort has been to procure as much exact information about as many men as possible, as a matter of permanent record as well as of present human interest. The replies sent in have had to be edited in order to group the information into an orderly scheme, and if any man is misquoted or misconstrued the Secretary asks his charitable judgment. Excerpt from Ninth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1865, of Harvard College: July, 1895, to July, 1900 As in case of the last Report, you no doubt will notice that I have less of incident to narrate than in the earlier Reports. It is but fair to remind you that I do not claim to be writing a his tory of new brooms. I have narrated all that you have reported to me; but you have less to report. Even your activity in writing poetry seems to have subsided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
