Excerpt from Report of the State Tax Commissioner of Maryland, to the General Assembly, at Its January Session, 1880 This provision is a valuable one, in securing to every locality the benefit of all the real property within its borders for the purposes of taxation, and adds very much in many instances to the certainty of arriving at an accurate and true valuation of the shares of stock. Previous to the passage of the Act of 1878, chapter 178, a corporation located in one county might own large amounts of real property in some other county, in which none of its stockholders resided, and the whole assessed value of such real property so held, would be lost to the county in which the land was situate, because such real property was a com ponent part of the value of the shares of stock of the corpo ration to which it belonged. Very great injustice occurred frequently on this account, which will not be possible, if the provisions of the Act of 1878 are properly carried out.
