Excerpt from Report of the Fifty-Fifth Annual State Fair Held by the North Carolina Agricultural Society at Raleigh, North Carolina: Eighteenth to Twenty-Third October, 1915 We had open field plowing demonstrations by several gasoline Tractors and examples of good road making, and other field work with multiple plows cutting six to eight furrows at a time, disc harrows and cultivators doing the work of six to eight horses. These demonstrations naturally appealed to the interest of the farmers and others at all times, when weather permitted. Excerpt from Premium List and Regulations of the Fifty-Seventh Great State Fair of North Carolina: To Be Held by the North Carolina Agricultural Society at Raleigh, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, October 16, 17, 18, 19, 1917 Conservation and cooperation are the watchwords - Save the waste and win the war. Cooperation is one of the greatest forces in civilization. Conser vation and cooperation mean success. The management of the State Fair is trying hard to make each Fair more and more of a help in economic progress, and every one is invited to come and study the lessons it teaches - remember, this is your fair and DE pends ON you. Many thousands of dollars are offered in premiums, and the List has been carefully revised and enlarged. Especial attention is called to the great in crease in the Poultry Department. Practically all breeds in the American Standard of Perfection are now included, and a department for Boys' and Girls' Poultry Clubs has been made. Also a change is made in the Boys' Corn Clubs Department, whereby the State is divided into three sections, and the mountain counties will no longer compete with the coast counties, except for sweepstakes. A new department for the benefit of the Boys' Pig Clubs has been created, and will no doubt be a great stimulus to this important work. The interest in the County Agricultural Premiums and the Agricultural Display Premiums is so great that it has been necessary to limit exhibits to sixteen feet front space. It is the hope of the Fair management that counties will select the prize winners at the local County Fairs to compete for the premiums at the State Fair. Excerpt from State Fair of North Carolina: To Be Held by the North Carolina Agricultural Society at Raleigh, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, October 17, 18, 19, 29, 21, 22, 1910 The year 1010 finds the State Fair at a half-century milepost in its long and honorable career. For fifty consecutive years since the reorganization of the Society on its present basis, not to mention the years before that to which the memory of man hardly runneth, every autumn the people of the State have loved to gather at the Capital for the "Great State Fair." As an institution it is one of our oldest, one of our most uplifting because stimulating, one of the most solidly fixed in the traditions and affections of North Carolinians. So this is Jubilee year, with the happy slogan, "Fiftieth Great State Fair and Home-coming Jubilee," for many who have left the land of the long-leaf pine and won demand for their services to mankind in other commonwealths have indicated a desire to "go to the Fair" once more. It is expected that the Capital City of Raleigh will make it easy and pleasant for the home-comers to join in the jubilee. In the face of a number of years of increasingly unprecedented successes the management has become so firmly convinced of the unshakeable nature of the public sentiment upon which the State Fair rests as a foundation, that the year 1010 finds it embarked upon a policy of providing more lasting and permanent structures at the Fair Grounds. There is under construction at this writing, to be completed before the opening of the Fair of 1010, a reinforced concrete exhibition building of the most modern conception, 60 x 150 feet, of ornamental architecture, surmounted by a pagoda-like roof garden overlooking the race track and taking in a view of the entire grounds. The building will be absolutely fireproof, with concrete floors and metal doors and high windows. It will be used for the installation of agricultural and horticultural exhibits. An idea of it may be gathered from the small cut on the front cover of this book. Several much-needed improvements for the accommodation of the crowds and vehicles at the gates and on the grounds have been made. They will be appreciated in the added comfort. The Fiftieth Great State Fair and Home-coming Jubilee will be formally opened by Gov. William Walton Kitchin on Monday, October 17, 1910, at 12 o'clock, and will continue throughout the week. The management is determined to surpass all former successes and establish in this good year of grace a new high record in all that goes to make up the greatest of all Southern agricultural fairs, replete with exhibits in Agriculture, Horticulture, Farm Implements and Machinery of latest labor-saving invention: products of North Carolina industry of every description from all parts of the State; the products of skill and art, in cooking, preserving, plain and fancy needle-work of all kinds; in short everything from the North Carolina farm, dairy, home and factory will be shown. The list of premiums has been entirely revised in many of the departments this year. Four premiums are now offered on county displays, the smallest being one hundred dollars: and it is expected that these exhibitions from the counties collectively will be more of a feature than ever before. Special attention is called to our corn and cotton contests, with premiums on corn of $100, $50 and $25 for men, and in the same amounts for boys under eighteen. In the cotton contest the premiums are $50 $25 and $10. In addition to all of this the Fair offers prizes supplementing the North Carolina Boys Corn Club Contests conducted by the State Experiment Station. Again $400 and $200 premiums are offered jointly by the State Board of Agriculture and the North Carolina Agricultural Society for the best and second best most varied and most artistically arranged collective agricultural individual exhibi
