Excerpt from Geological Survey of Canada, Report of Progress From Its Commencement to 1863: Illustrated by 498 Wood Cuts in the d104, and Accompanied by an Atlas of Maps and Sections Mr. James Lowe, a farmer settled in the township of Grenville, after acquiring sufficient experience by accompanying me as assistant in my explorations in his own neighborhood, has been employed in tracing out, under my direction, the distribution of the crystalline limestones inter stratified in the Laurentian system, and of the intrusive masses which intersect this, in the counties of Ottawa, Argenteuil, Two Mountains, and Terrebonne. In this intricate investigation, in a district almost wholly covered with forest, he has accumulated a great number of valuable facts, which, joined to my own labors in these counties, have enabled me to prepare a detailed map of the geology of this interesting region. Mr. Richard Oatey, a practical Cornish miner, residing in Montreal, has from time to time been entrusted with the examination of metalliferous lodes and deposits, particularly those holding lead, copper, silver, and gold, with a view of ascertaining their economic value. Excerpt from Report of Progress: From 1863 to 1866 The preparation of the General Report on the Geology of Canada published in 1868, and of the Atlas of maps and sections lately issued to illustrate it, has unavoidably interrupted the regular succession of the annual reports which it was customary.to transmit to the Government, detailing the progress of the investigation under my charge. In an appendix to the introduction to the Atlas, a list of all the publications of the Geological Survey is given, and by a reference to this it will be seen that the last of the annual reports was that for 1858. But the General Report contains the results ascertained to the end of 1862, and in the maps is included the representation of the facts relating to geological distribution which were determined dur ing the subsequent year. 1 shall now have the honor of submitting to Your Excellency the further progress made in the investigation up to the present time.
