Excerpt from The Art of the Italian Renaissance: A Handbook for Students and Travellers In this interesting treatise a German writer has made an attempt, and a curiously successful one, to deal with the great period of the High Renaissance in Italy from a somewhat novel point of view - that, in fact, of the craftsman himself, rather than that of the interpreter. Passing over the anecdotic and historical aspects of schools and periods, he has made a synthetic study of that completed form of art which has been described - mistakenly, he contends - as a return to classic ideals brought about by the discovery of antique models. He has confined himself for purposes of demonstration to the works of the great masters of Central Italy. The book is of modest dimensions, and its author does not claim to have dealt exhaustively with his vast theme, but rather to be one of the pioneers in a field that has been strangely neglected by art-historians and the newest school of art-critics - the field of pure aesthetics. Insisting strongly on the necessity of systematic work on this fruitful ground, Herr Wolfflin does not wander haphazard among the artistic phenomena of the period. The whole question of colour, for instance, has been left for future consideration. He deals here with problems of form alone. Excerpt from Artist of the Italian Renaissance: Translated From the Chroniclers Some explanation is perhaps necessary of the plan and method of this book. My subject is the Italian artists as theylwere affected by the political history of their land, sometimes them selves taking part actively. In the stirring events of the time, and sometimes swept away and their works submerged by the torrent of disaster. The rise of art in Italy has always been connected with the rise of the cities in riches and prosperity, and the eager impetuosity which displayed itself in their fierce rivalry was as manifest in the con tests of art as in war. Excerpt from The Civilisation of the Renaissance in Italy Dr. Burckhardt's work on the Renaissance in Italy is too well known, not only to students of the period, but now to a wider circle of readers, for any introduction to be necessary. The increased interest which has of late years, in England, been taken in this and kindred subjects, and the welcome which has been given to the works of other writers upon them, encourage me to hope that in publishing this translation I am meeting a want felt by some who are either unable to read German at all, or to whom an English version will save a good deal of time and trouble. The translation is made from the third edition of the original, recently published in Germany, with slight additions to the text, and large additions to the notes, by Dr. Ludwig Geiger, of Berlin. It also contains some fresh matter communicated by Dr. Burckhardt to Professor Diego Valbusa of Mantua, the Italian translator of the book. To all three gentlemen my thanks are due for courtesy shown, or help given to me in the course of my work. A new edition--now in two volumes--of the largest and most comprehensive textbook about Italian Renaissance art. Now in its second edition, Italian Renaissance Art presents an updated and even more accessible history. The book has been split into two volumes: the first, covering the period 1300 to 1510; the second, 1490 to 1600. The volumes retain the same innovative decade-by-decade structure as the first edition, and a number of chapters have been revised by the authors to reflect the latest scholarship. The coverage of the Trecento has been expanded, and a new appendix section explains all the key Renaissance art-making techniques, with illustrations and step-by-steps for such processes as lost-wax casting. This book tells the story of art in the great cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice while profiling a range of other centers throughout Italy--including in this edition art from Naples, Padua, and Palermo.

Excerpt from Renaissance and Modern Art Which keeps closest in touch with the point of view which recognizes Renaissance Italy as the main source of modern culture, while Ranke's histories, especially his History of the Popes and his History of England, are the best general reference for the sixteenth and seventeenth cen turies at large. Fiske's Discovery of America, and Campbell's Puritan in Holland, England, and America, are the books best calculated to bring our own American history into line with that of continental Europe. I have mentioned these various books from the conviction that the only true philosophy of modern history is that which moves from the Renaissance as its elementary basis, that the study Of Renaissance art is the best approach to Renaissance history, and that the best Supplementary reading is that of the historians whose point of view is the largest and most comprehensive.
