Excerpt from Concrete Bridges and Culverts, for Both Railroads and Highways Bridges of solid concrete are superior to those of any other material. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. Excerpt from Continuous Concrete Bridges Only single bearings are required at interior supports of continuous bridges, materially reducing the width of piers compared to simple spans. Cost of the substructure is thereby reduced; obstruction to stream flow is minimized and the tendency to scour resulting from large piers is lessened. Continuous bridges require fewer expansion joints, which reduces first cost slightly and the expense of maintaining joints. In a well designed continuous girder bridge, the depth of sections follows closely the moment requirements, varying from a minimum at the center of spans to a maximum at the supports. The effect of dead load on the design is reduced accordingly. The variation of section from center of spans to sup ports is also favorable to the stress requirements. Excerpt from Reinforced Concrete Construction, Vol. 3: Bridges and Culverts, Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin A concrete arch as ordinarily constructed - that is, with fixed ends - is statically indeterminate, but it can be analyzed by taking into account the elasticity of the material. The arch ring is nothing more than a curved beam and is so considered. In arches of stone, it is essential (if we disregard, as we should, the adhesion between the mortar and the stone) that the line of pressure for any possible loading should pass within the middle third of each joint of the arch ring, in order to avoid a tendency for any joint to Open. In arches of concrete, however, the structure considered may be made monolithic and thus capable of withstanding tension, which means that the line of pressure may pass outside of the middle third without endangering the structure. As regards a plain-concrete arch, no variation of the line of pressure from the middle third should properly be allowed in practice, due, of course, to the low strength of concrete in tension but, on the other hand, where concrete is reinforced with steel, a considerable variation of this line may be permitted.
