Value can be added to projects for restoring the aesthetic appeal of modified waterways at very little extra cost if the needs of the living components of the system are taken into account. This manual was prepared by the European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission (EIFAC) to provide guidelines and techniques for the rehabilitation of rivers for fish. It is intended for the use of fisheries managers, fisheries and wildlife biologists, land and water use planners, and civil engineers working on projects involving the protection and rehabilitation of inland running waters. While the primary orientation of the manual is towards rivers of the temperate zone, the techniques described can be applied to the restoration of rivers of similar dimensions in other climatic areas.

In this edited work, international experts in fisheries management and ecology review and appraise the status of river fisheries, assessment methodology, constraints on development, issues and options regarding management and associated problems in both temperate and tropical countries. Recommendations are made to improve management and an attempt is made to provide guidelines for formulating policy, for planning methodology and for evaluating future activities. Assessment of fish community structure and dynamics. Factors constraining stock recruitment. Fish habitat requirements. Instream flow needs. Impact of water resource schemes. Rehabilitation of river fisheries. Enhancement of fish stocks. Exploitation of stocks. Management of migratory fish stocks. Conservation of endangered species. Integrated river management. Bioeconomic issues. Legislation. Multinational management of rivers. Case studies.

Rehabilitation of Rivers Principles and Implementation Edited by Louise C. de Waal Division of Environmental and Analytical Sciences, University of Wolverhampton, UK Andrew R. G. Large Department of Geography, University of Newcastle, UK and P. Max Wade Department of Environmental Sciences, University of Hertfordshire, UK River rehabilitation has become an issue at the top of the agenda for water authorities and river managers in many countries throughout the world. This challenging topic involves a wide range of themes, many of which are brought together in this volume. They concern planning strategy, implementation and project appraisal for a number of different types of river systems including upland, lowland and urban rivers. Topic areas addressed include hydrology, geomorphology, ecology and economics as, to be successful, rehabilitation of freshwaters must incorporate all of these subjects within a holistic framework. This volume covers a wide range of countries, provides comprehensive and integrated coverage of factors concerning river rehabilitation and encompasses policy, planning and implementation. As such, the text will have a lasting reference value and practical application. Rehabilitation of Rivers combines prescriptive, analytical and reviewing contributions, covering a wide range of case studies from Britain, continental Europe, the USA, Australia and Japan. It also examines strategic issues such as catchment planning and integrated application of ecology and engineering in river rehabilitation. This book will be an important text for all water authorities and river managers as well as hydrologists, geomorphologists, ecologists and nature conservationists.

Many rivers, lakes and other inland waters have been modified and degraded by human activities. Rehabilitation of degraded systems and mitigation of impacts of ongoing stresses are needed to preserve ecosystem services and fisheries and are of a high priority if the aquatic biodiversity of inland waters is to be conserved. A number of technical solutions for rehabilitation and mitigation are available to restore habitat diversity, provide for environmental flows and ensure longitudinal and lateral connectivity within such systems. It is recommended that such methods are applied on a basin-wide scale but it is recognized that more restricted sections of waterbodies may have to be targeted. Planning for rehabilitation projects needs to be carefully conceived with clear objectives of the rehabilitation and selection methods to be used. Selecting appropriate methods for any particular waterbody depends on local, social and economic conditions and priorities. Land tenure, local laws and the interests of other local stakeholders in the resource also need to be incorporated into rehabilitation plans. In international rivers and lakes, rehabilitation plans may need negotiation and cooperation by all riparian states. After execution, rehabilitation projects should be carefully monitored in order to meet the objectives.
