Excerpt from Register and Manual of the State of Connecticut 1888: Prepared Pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly of 1886 In the compilation of this volume the first aim has been to accomplish, as nearly as possible, absolute accuracy in respect to statistical information. So far as relates to matter procurable from official sources, this result, it is believed, has been practically reached; with regard to other data, necessarily obtained from sources less authentic and certain, and more or less difficult of access, a large amount of time has been expended, and much diligence exercised to secure the best results attainable, and while it is thought that the work here presented will be found to be substantially reliable, the indulgence of the public is solicited for such occasional and unavoidable errors as shall appear. The law directing the publication of this book provides, that in addition to certain specified information which it is required to contain, it may include such other information relating to State departments and institutions, and other matters of public concern, as to the Secretary shall deem desirable. In tbe use of the discretion thereby given, it has been the object of the compiler to present, within the limitations of proper space, such various information as would seem to promise the greatest general usefulness, and meet with popular acceptance.
