Patch size assessment is a planning tool for evaluating whether the distribution of patch sizes within a landscape is sufficient to meet biodiversity conservation objectives. It is also a tool for evaluating different harvesting distribution options for reducing risks to biodiversity. The purpose of this document is to describe a recommended approach for all patch size assessments in the Cariboo Forest Region. Topics covered include definitions of types of patches, the role of landscape unit boundaries, the use of variable buffer widths to assess forest interior patches, the merger of small polygons & other features into a surrounding patch, comparisons with Biodiversity Guidebook & Landscape Unit Planning Guide definitions, the unit of patch size assessment, and patch size distribution guidelines, It also describes patch size maps & analysis tables that have been developed & distributed.

An adjustment factor has been developed to address apparent inaccuracies in the forest inventory in the Cariboo Forest Region of British Columbia with regard to the total area of old forest on the landscape. The adjustment has been frequently applied to a variety of strategic & operational issues and has sometimes been used in ways that are inconsistent with principal assumptions underlying its use. This note describes those key assumptions and the limitations of the inventory adjustment, so that inappropriate uses will be avoided. Recommendations are made to ensure that post-1996 applications of the adjustment reasonably satisfy the assumptions and therefore are reasonably valid & technically defensible.

Forest landscapes in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region of British Columbia have been subdivided into two ecological groups for purposes of seral stage assessments. The purpose of this note is to provide a precise & updated definition of the two groups, the fir group and the pine group. The groups are distinguished by their natural disturbance regimes and the tree species composition of their climax or long-persisting seral stages. A working definition of each group is presented and changes to the 1996 working definitions are outlined.

In the Cariboo-Chilcotin regional biodiversity conservation strategy, seral stage targets should be achieved on each natural disturbance type (NDT)-biogeoclimatic (BEC) unit to best meet biodiversity objectives. This note presents guidelines for aggregating small NDT-BEC units with larger units in those cases where seral targets cannot be achieved in the smaller unit. It also explains the placement of old growth management areas in relation to small NDT-BEC units or in aggregated units.

The management approach described in this note represents a mitigative strategy intended to maintain options for biodiversity for as long as possible in the area affected by the mountain pine beetle outbreak in the Cariboo-Chilcotin area of British Columbia. The note first sets out key principles of the strategy, which relate to such matters as impacts on biodiversity, the relative biodiversity value of a stand, map-based assessment, and ecological features. An integrated management strategy is then presented that focusses on the management of ecological features within the context of an overall mountain pine beetle management strategy. It includes directions for management of the current attack & old attack, salvage harvesting choices, and long-term management.
