Between 1999 and 2011 David Goldblatt created personal photography in color for the first time. While Goldblatt had employed color extensively in his professional work since 1964, it was only with the new political dispensation and the advances of digital reproduction at the end of the millennium that he felt it pertinent comprehensively to make personal photographs in color. Initially Goldblatt photographed in his immediate environment Johannesburg, before deciding to examine South Africa by taking photographs within a radius of 500 meters of each of the 122 points of intersection of a whole degree of latitude and a whole degree of longitude within its borders. Yet in time Goldblatt encountered uninspiring locations and abandoned the project, although he retained the idea of intersections. From time to time, over a period of nine years, he travelled the country in search of intersections--of ideas, values, histories, conflicts, congruencies, fears, joys and aspirations-- and the land in which, and often because of which, these formed. This book brings together a selection of Goldblatt's color photography in South Africa from 2002 to 2011. An earlier version, Intersections, was published by Prestel in 2005, and the catalogue Intersections Intersected, consisting of paired black-and-white and color photographs, was published by the Serralves Museum, Porto, in 2008.

The authors define a class of random measures, spatially independent martingales, which we view as a natural generalization of the canonical random discrete set, and which includes as special cases many variants of fractal percolation and Poissonian cut-outs. The authors pair the random measures with deterministic families of parametrized measures , and show that under some natural checkable conditions, a.s. the mass of the intersections is Hölder continuous as a function of . This continuity phenomenon turns out to underpin a large amount of geometric information about these measures, allowing us to unify and substantially generalize a large number of existing results on the geometry of random Cantor sets and measures, as well as obtaining many new ones. Among other things, for large classes of random fractals they establish (a) very strong versions of the Marstrand-Mattila projection and slicing results, as well as dimension conservation, (b) slicing results with respect to algebraic curves and self-similar sets, (c) smoothness of convolutions of measures, including self-convolutions, and nonempty interior for sumsets, and (d) rapid Fourier decay. Among other applications, the authors obtain an answer to a question of I. Łaba in connection to the restriction problem for fractal measures.

In March 1988, an international workshop on intersections without traffic signals was held at the Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany. The proceedings of this workshop were published by Springer 1). The workshop was performed in a very harmonious atmosphere, which stimulated the experts from different countries to communicate and exchange their ideas and experiences. The presentations and the written contributions documented the present state of technical solutions for design and engineering of unsi gnalized intersections both regarding scientific research and practical applications. Moreover, numerous unsolved problems were identified. Thus, the 1988 workshop stimulated new developments in the field of unsignalized inter sections in several countries. In the meantime, these investigations have lead to a remarkable progress. For example in Germany a new guideline for unsignalized cross intersections and T-junctions has been finished and is going to be introduced in 1991. New results on roundabout capacity have been worked out as well. Many particularly important developments were made in foreign countries. Especially in the United States, an increasing interest in this subject can be observed. In the annual meetings of the TRB, this item received great attention. Many research institutes in North America have concentrated their activities on that point. A new TRB-circular concerning unsignalized intersections is going to be published. It will contain a new procedure for four-way-stop-control intersections, which seems to be a special feature of North American traffic engineering. However, new results from the US for two-way-stop control intersections are available as well.
